Watch: Temecula mom rescues kitten from Cajon Pass ledge

An abandoned kitten has found his new home after a Temecula mother, with a car full of kids, pulled over on the Cajon Pass to rescue him from the freeway median, according to messages and video she shared with KTLA on Saturday.

Through her Instagram account @mrsmccaffrey, Ryann McCaffrey told KTLA that traffic was moving slowly on July 28 when she spotted the kitten on the center divider. She said she stopped, got out and tried to coax the animal to safety.

After the first attempt failed, she used slices of her child’s Lunchables ham “to show I wasn’t a threat.” The kitten was open-mouth panting and “felt so hot,” she said, adding temperatures were close to 100 degrees.

The footage shows McCaffrey approaching the cat as he perches on a wall in between the lanes. The animal hisses; McCaffrey grabs him from the ledge and quickly shakes one hand as if in pain while holding the kitten with the other, consistent with a bite or scratch. And yet, she carried on with the rescue, carrying the young cat to safety.

They brought the animal into their vehicle, stopped at a pet store for supplies and continued to Bishop, where a veterinarian sedated the kitten for an exam. The vet told the family the cat was about 9 weeks old, feral, had two types of worms and was covered in fleas, McCaffrey said.

Her ability to talk that cat into getting caught, and her ability to catch it are exceptional. She did a remarkable job at that.

Also glad that neither she nor the stranger who pulled into the median were involved in an accident, and that neither were responsible for causing an accident upstream.

That we know of.

That was wonderful of the woman to save the cat. I have rescued about 40 cats in the past, getting them into homes or non-kill shelters. I didn’t get any while driving, however.

For some reason, as I read the story, I knew she’d be wearing yoga pants.
