YouTube's new AI age verification is coming soon — here's what's going to change

AI will assess whether an account belongs to an adult or a teen.

YouTube is going to start relying on AI to determine whether or not an account belongs to a teen or an adult, and take actions as a result. In a recent blog post, YouTube announced machine learning would "interpret a variety of signals that help us to determine whether a user is over or under 18".

If the AI believes the account is being operated by a teen, it will automatically apply age-appropriate protections, including:

Disabling personalized advertising

Turning on digital wellbeing tools

Adding safeguards to recommendations, including limiting repetitive views of some kinds of content.

With AI doing the heavy lifting there's always the possibility it gets something wrong and accidentally flags an adult user as a teen. At which point, the safeguards will click on like a key in the lock and that account holder will have to prove their age.

YouTube says that in such cases a credit card or government ID will be needed to verify the user is over 18. Until that step has been completed, they won't be able to watch any age-restricted content.

Sounds like personal data harvesting; how in the world are people going to upload their personal IDs and CC account numners when every one knows such things can be intercepted by 3rd parties?

Breaking: Youtube says they were hacked and the data hacker’s breach got millions of real IDs and Credit Card numbers.

They are just trying to identify you so that you can be flooded with designed advertisements. They don’t give one fig about minors accessing pron. The numbers of ads on YouTube have ruined it. Ads. Ads. Ads. Ads .. ad infinitum

Right there are some good examples as to doing away with AI. There are many more.

Really, what they're trying to do is end the ability to surf and post on the internet anonymously.

It was never about porn. "For the children!" has always been the mantra to have more regulation and oversight over our lives.

And, sadly, many here were cheering it on. Just go peruse the multiple threads about age verification coming to PornHub as if this obvious consequence was unforeseen.

Yep... The porn is the least of our real worries... They are going to destroy the internet with this trend.

I would be happy if they disabled "personalized advertising."

Yes, that isn’t really a threat is it?
