From yesterday
George Kooymans, guitarist and co-founder of the Dutch rockers Golden Earring, has died. He was 77.
Well that’s three ....
I had several of his albums, saw him live and even had the T-shirt to prove it.
I used one of his songs (Hide and Seek https://youtu.be/3IbGbkfHb-E?si=XsWU5s-ZPN2DD6UE) as background for a high school film project.
RIP. For a while, the jazz station I listen to online would play “Give It All You Got” near the end of the business day and I found that nice and uplifting.
This is scary. So many younger than me are dead. Most of my friends are dead. I am still going strong at age 85. But this type of news is scary.
As the largest generation in history dies off, the pace will increase for a while, of course.
RIP
Wishing you good fortune in your recovery. I’m fighting a condition too, it’s part of our landscape at this age. Gig tonight, gotta keep stepping.
Another great talent from Rochester. R.I.P. Chuck Mangione.
Seems like we’re losing alot of “influencers” lately, the real influencers.
One of the great song writers that contributed positively to our culture.
Forgot about that, I got a chance to go in 1980 to Lake Placid, probably the last time they will ever have a full Winter Olympics there.
When the other Mangione made the news I tried to remember how Chuck’s big record went.
After a while I couldn’t see the other Mangione’s name without Chuck’s tune starting up in my head.
The best jazz from upstate NY. I had bought Friends and Love off ebay. The vinyl arrived the day before Hurricane Katrina. It was lost in the hurricane, along with my turntable. I never got to play the album.

I first heard it on the radio. I was immediately enthralled and became a fan. Then he came and played a concert for our high school. Saw him perform in Utica at the Stanley Theater.
Back in the 80s, I was to start playing at a new theme park in Florida. My name is vaguely, somewhat similar to Mangione’s and when I stepped out to start my show, there was a crowd of people expecting to see Chuck tooting on his horn. What a surprise for them to have a guy dressed up in western attire, playing a banjo and doing the ol’ favorites like Cripple Creek and The Ballad of Jed Clampett.
Slowly, quietly, they started drifting away......
I was a cornet player, but no longer play. I just prayed for you in Jesus’ Name. Keep playing! I hope Mangione is playing in heaven’s orchestra with Gabriel.
I found the whole album online, Friends and Love.

Yes! The band even came to play at our Central NY high school in the early 70s.
The Golden Earring guy too
Safe and effective
