Have We Reached Late-Stage Climate Hysteria?

A United Nation’s report issued last month calls for the criminalization of spreading “disinformation and misinformation” about global warming. Is it the desperate act of a dying crusade – or business as usual for the climate fanatics?

While our hope is the former, it’s more likely the latter.

According to Elisa Morgera, the U.N. special rapporteur on climate change, governments should “criminalize misinformation and misrepresentation (greenwashing) by the fossil fuel industry” as well as “criminalize media and advertising firms for amplifying disinformation and misinformation by fossil fuel companies.”

This is disturbing. Who gets to decide what is “disinformation and misinformation”? We’ve already seen, thanks to COVID-19, that the meaning of those words is determined exploitatively by the ruling class and the loudest voices, not by any objective means.

Just the News quotes experts who say the call for criminalization shows a growing desperation among the climate alarmists. Given that global warming has cooled off considerably as a pressing issue for the public, this rings true.

Yet demanding that skeptics be arrested and tried is not a fresh fantasy for the eco-fascists. They’ve been dreaming about a 21st-century inquisition of those who hold dissenting views (the Galileos of our time?) for more than a decade:

- Democratic Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island urged the Justice Department “to consider filing a racketeering suit against the oil and coal industries for having promoted wrongful thinking on climate change,” author Walter Olson noted in 2015.

- Twenty “scientists” wrote a letter to President Barack Obama to “strongly endorse” Whitehouse’s “call for a RICO investigation.”

- In 2016, a year after 17 attorneys general pursued fraud allegations against climate change skeptics, Obama Attorney General Loretta Lynch told the Senate Judiciary Committee that “the FBI was looking into information regarding climate change dissent and ‘whether or not it meets the criteria for what we could take action on,'” the Washington Times reported.

-Even before that, a hack writing for Gawker claimed that “man-made climate change kills a lot of people,” that “it’s going to kill a lot more,” and insisted that “it’s time to punish the climate-change liars.”

- Bill Nye, “The Science Guy,” who is actually an engineer, said “we’ll see what happens” when asked about Robert Kennedy Jr.’s 2014 wish that there was a law to “punish” skeptics and “deniers.” Nye said he thought the “chilling effect” of punishment against “scientists who are in extreme doubt about climate change” was “good.”

- Fifteen years ago, a “British lawyer-turned-campaigner” was agitating for “the United Nations to accept ‘ecocide’ as a fifth ‘crime against peace,’ which could be tried at the International Criminal Court,” the Guardian reported. Supporters wanted to use it “to prosecute ‘climate deniers’ who distort science and facts to discourage voters and politicians from taking action to tackle global warming and climate change.”

- A U.S. attorney subpoenaed the Competitive Enterprise Institute’s donor lists for the purpose of punishing “CEI by making people less willing to donate,” University of Tennessee law professor Glenn Reynolds and Instapundit founder wrote in USA Today.

- Earlier this year, a screed from a “climate justice” academic writing under the imprimatur of UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, asked if “international criminal law” should “be used against those who promote this dangerous trend” of “climate denial.” She answered the question thusly: “Criminal sanctions are the most potent tools we have to mark out conduct that lies beyond all limits of toleration.” The time has arrived, she added, “to prosecute them.”

- Michael Mann of the hockey stick graph tried to put National Review out of business with a lawsuit.

Rather than debate the science and weigh the evidence, global warming zealots have long preferred shutting down those who don’t agree with them, those who dare say things they don’t like. They’d rather silence heterodoxy with jail time, prison sentences, and economic sanctions, which neatly sums up who they are and what their goals are.

In 1995 Thomas Sowell wrote “The Vision of the Anointed” which I believe is still the best analysis of left’s tactic we see in climate change crap and elsewhere.

Fossil Fooled: Lives vs. Lies
Kevin McCullough

The opinions expressed by columnists are their own and do not necessarily represent the views of Townhall.com.

For over a century, fossil fuels have been the favorite villain of the political left. Oil, coal, and natural gas are the boogeymen blamed for everything from melting ice caps to hurricanes to your aunt’s asthma. But what if I told you that the biggest threat to humanity isn’t fossil fuels—it’s the lies we’ve been told about them?

Here’s the truth the climate cult doesn’t want you to hear: fossil fuels haven’t killed us—they’ve saved us.

Let’s do something the green elites hate: look at the numbers.

In the 1920s, before fossil fuel infrastructure was widespread, more than 400,000 people a year died from climate-related causes—floods, droughts, storms, extreme temperatures. Fast forward to today: fewer than 10,000 people die annually from those same causes worldwide.

That’s a 98% drop in climate-related deaths, even while the global population has more than quadrupled.

How is that possible?

It wasn’t wind turbines or solar panels. It wasn’t a Greta Thunberg tweet or a John Kerry jet-set speech. It was fossil fuels—and the civilization they empowered.

Fossil fuels made the world stronger, safer, faster, and more prepared.

They power the satellites that warn us about incoming hurricanes. The computers that model disaster response. The ambulances and helicopters that race toward danger. The generators that keep hospitals alive when the grid fails. The desalination plants that turn saltwater into drinking water. The supply chains that move food, medicine, and clean water where it’s needed most.

Without fossil fuels, none of it works.

But fossil fuels didn’t just help us respond to disaster—they helped us prevent it.

Natural gas-derived fertilizers created the Green Revolution, allowing us to feed billions who would’ve otherwise starved. Oil-powered tractors and transportation networks transformed how we plant, harvest, and distribute food. Fossil-fueled factories, refrigeration, and logistics saved entire continents from hunger.

And during the pandemic? Don’t kid yourself. Everything from vaccine development to ventilator manufacturing to distribution to storage depended on fossil energy. Even your Zoom call needed electricity powered by something more stable than a rooftop panel.

Now try telling a mother in Ghana, or a farmer in rural India, that they don’t deserve those same benefits because you feel guilty driving an SUV. That’s not just elitist—it’s energy apartheid.

If the climate crowd really cared about saving lives, they’d be demanding more fossil fuel access for the world’s poor—not less.

But they don’t care about saving lives. They care about controlling them.

It’s why they want to take away your gas stove. It’s why they throw tantrums over a Ford F-150 but ignore the private jets lining the tarmac at Davos. It’s why they tell working-class Americans to “go electric” while subsidizing a $70,000 Tesla for their upper-middle-class donor base.

And it’s all built on a convenient lie: that fossil fuels are inherently evil.

Yes, fossil fuels emit carbon. Yes, the planet has warmed modestly over the past century. But here’s the part they never tell you: the benefits of fossil fuels have dramatically outpaced the risks.

In fact, the only reason we’re even wealthy and secure enough to debate climate change is because fossil fuels already fixed the more urgent problems: starvation, disease, cold, heat, clean water, transportation, and access to modern medicine.

Take fossil fuels away, and you don’t solve climate change—you spark a global humanitarian crisis.

- No tractors = no food

- No trucks = no medicine

- No heat = cold deaths

- No A/C = heatstroke

- No power = hospitals go dark

But that’s not the scary fantasy the Left sells you in their dystopian climate documentaries. Instead, they promise a mythical green utopia where solar panels power skyscrapers, Teslas line the highways, and no one ever gets their hands dirty digging anything out of the ground.

It’s a delusion, wrapped in privilege, sold with fear.

Meanwhile, the rest of us live in the real world, where the bills need to be paid, kids need to be fed, and winter still gets cold.

Here’s the good news: the fossil fuel industry has never been cleaner, more efficient, or more innovative than it is today. American oil and gas companies are leading the world in reducing emissions—even as they produce more energy than ever before.

That’s a win. But it’s one the green radicals don’t want to celebrate—because it doesn’t give them more power.

And let’s be clear: this is all about power. Not the kind that turns on your lights—the kind that lets bureaucrats and activists control your life. Your car. Your stove. Your thermostat. Your mobility. Your decisions.

They’ve fossil-fooled the public for decades. But the data tells the real story:

Fossil fuels didn’t doom humanity. They delivered it.

They didn’t cause the climate crisis—they helped us survive it.

And if we abandon them too soon, the cost won’t be environmental. It will be human.

Would you like to see proof of all the good fossil fuels have done? Go to Oilfacts.com and investigate for yourself.

It’s time to stop apologizing for the engine of human flourishing.

It’s time to stand up for energy freedom.

And it’s time to remind the world:

We weren’t killed by carbon. We were saved by it.

I think the real “climate change” is the one taking place in Europe which is an invasion of immigrant cultures. Cultural climate change is well advanced in Britain, France and Germany. 40% of newborns in the UK were from foriegn born parents last year. Austria’s schools are a similar percentage of muslim immigrants. This a much more significant climate change than what the weather brings.

Will the new Dutch population in two generations plug the holes in the dikes?

We are at the end of spending real amounts of money on it.

IF you want an EV, buy a EV and enjoy it.

If you want a hybrid, buy a hybrid and enjoy it.

Im not dropping 70k on a new car every 5 years, so you are going to deal with my 10 year old cars and their visits to a gas station. I find it remarkable that I can haul 4 and 2 dogs at 25mpg at 80mph, with a depreciation plus fuel of less than 20 cents a mile, can we be happy with the improvements?

The climate doomsayers have been preaching climate apocalypse for decades, yet the promised apocalypse never happens. Even stalwart doomsayers like Greta Thunberg have moved on to other radical causes as the climate catastrophe crusade is losing traction with people who are tired of the harangue or are seeing the real consequences of embracing a ridiculous carbon free society. Perhaps these climate Karen’s will finally just go away.

Good point, as “global warming” is the only “climate change” the mind controllers care about. It’s just that the term “global warming” didn’t play as well in the focus groups.

The many points of no return.

By me BFW

**1980**

Global warming apocalypse 1980s edition The U.N. was already claiming in the late 1980s that the world had only a decade to solve global warming or face the consequences. The San Jose Mercury News reported June 30, 1989 that a “senior environmental official at the United Nations, Noel Brown, says entire nations could be wiped off the face of the earth by rising sea levels if global warming is not reversed by the year 2000.” That prediction didn’t come true 17 years ago (29 Years NOW), and the U.N. Is sounding the same alarm today.

**2002**

Environmentalists warned in 2002 the world had a decade to go green Environmentalist write George Monbiot wrote in the UK Guardian that within “as little as 10 years, the world will be faced with a choice: arable farming either continues to feed the world’s animals or it continues to feed the world’s people. It cannot do both.”

About 930 million people around the world were undernourished in 2002, according to U.N. data. By 2014, that number shrank to 805 million. Sorry, Monbiot.

**2007**

The U.N.’s top climate scientist said in 2007 we only had four years to save the world Rajendra Pachauri, the former head of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change said in 2007 that if “there’s no action before 2012, that’s too late.” “What we do in the next two to three years will determine our future. This is the defining moment,” he said. Well, it’s 2017 and no new U.N. climate treaty has been presented. The only thing that’s changed since then is that Pachauri was forced to resign earlier this year amid accusations he sexually harassed multiple female coworkers.

**2008**

FOURTEEN YEARS AGO… Al Gore Predicted North Pole Would Be Completely Ice Free by

Today. Gore made the prediction to a German audience in 2008. He told them that “the entire North ‘polarized’ cap will disappear in 5 years.”

http://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2017/12/nine-years-ago-al-gore-predicted-north-pole-completely-ice-free-today/

**2009**

Prince Charles famously warned in July 2009 that humanity had only 96 months to save the world from “irretrievable climate and ecosystem collapse, and all that goes with it.” That deadline has passed, and the prince has not issued an update to when the world needs to be saved.

**2009**

Even before that, then-National Aeronautics and Space Administration Goddard Space Flight Center head James Hansen warned in 2009 that Obama only “has four years to save Earth.” World leaders met in Copenhagen, Denmark in 2009 to potentially hash out another climate treaty. That same year, the head of Canada’s Green Party wrote that there was only “hours” left to stop global warming.

“We have hours to act to avert a slow-motion tsunami that could destroy civilization as we know it,” Elizabeth May, leader of the Greens in Canada, wrote in 2009. “Earth has a long time. Humanity does not. We need to act urgently. We no longer have decades; we have hours. We mark that in Earth Hour on Saturday.”

**2009**

United Kingdom Prime Minister Gordon Brown said there was only 50 days left to save Earth The year 2009 was a bad time for global warming predictions. That year Brown warned there was only “50 days to save the world from global warming,” the BBC reported. According to Brown there was “no plan B.” Brown has been booted out of office since then.

**2012**

The United Nations Foundation President Tim Wirth told Climatewire in 2012 that Obama’s second term was “the last window of opportunity” to impose policies to restrict fossil fuel use. Wirth said it’s “the last chance we have to get anything approaching 2 degrees Centigrade,” adding that if “we don’t do it now, we are committing the world to a drastically different place.”

**2014**

France’s foreign minister said we only have “500 days” to stop “climate chaos” When Laurent Fabius met with Secretary of State John Kerry on May 13, 2014 to talk about world issues he said “we have 500 days to avoid climate chaos.” Ironically at the time of Fabius’ comments, the U.N. had scheduled a climate summit to meet in Paris in December 2015 — some 565 days after his remarks. Looks like the U.N. is 65 days too late to save the world. Make that years.

**2015**

World leaders meeting at the Vatican issued a statement saying that 2015 was the “last effective opportunity to negotiate arrangements that keep human-induced warming below 2-degrees [Celsius].”

Pope Francis wants to weigh in on global warming, and is expected to issue an encyclical saying basically the same thing. Francis reiterated that 2015 is the last chance to stop massive warming.

But what he should really say is that the U.N. conference is the “last” chance to cut a deal to stem global warming…since last year when the U.N. said basically the same thing about 2014’s climate summit. Jan 2 2016 24 days to Al Gore’s ’10 years to save the planet’ and ‘point of no return’ planetary emergency deadline.

http://wattsupwiththat.com/2016/01/02/24-days-to-al-gores-10-years-to-save-the-planet-and-point-of-no-return-planetary-emergency-deadline/

**2018**

While Trump rejects science, Obama and Clinton warn of climate change’s urgent danger By Greta Moran on Sep 7, 2018 The Democratic Party VIPs offered sobering remarks on the immediacy of

climate change on Friday. Former President Obama and former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton warned separately that climate change is not an intangible, future threat, but one that is at this moment devastating the planet and its inhabitants. During a “State of Democracy” speech at the University of Illinois, Obama offered a science-backed reminder: “We know that climate change isn’t just coming. It is here.” Clinton issued a similar sentiment on Twitter. “We’re not fighting for the planet in some abstract sense here,” she said. “We’re fighting for our continued ability to live on it.” She pointed to record-high temperatures across the world, the biggest wildfire in California history, and an unprecedented red tide in Florida — all visible signs that climate change is something to be contending with right now.
