Don’t you need a subscription to read that?

My mistake, an extension was blocking it.

My niece attended Camp Mystic when she was a child. A few years ago, one of my daughters expressed interest in going as well, but the cost of attendance was steep.

The camp sits in a stunning corner of the Texas Hill Country, a place of remarkable beauty that can become deadly in a matter of minutes.

Some may refer to it as a hundred-year or even a 500-year flood event. In reality, it’s closer to a 40-year flood and for something that occurs that frequently, precautions must be taken every single year.

Most of the campers got out, I read that there were more than 700 girls attending the camp, thankfully most of them were safely evacuated, although sadly that is no consolation to the families of those who weren’t.

Really hurts my heart to think of all these nice young people dying.

I was a summer camp girl. Nice camp up in Wisconsin on a lake. We canoed around the lake a lot and so did some boys from a nearby camp. We’d race them, but of course they allways beat us. Developed some longstanding friendships there.

The tennis courts were built on high ground, but the cabins housing the junior campers were not.

There were different camps, a boys camp all got out, another camp also was able to evacuate, some camps were empty at the time but I read that the camp director, an elderly woman was killed, very sad..looks like this Camp Mystic was just located in the wrong part, if they had been higher up they would have been fine

My unhinged lunatic cousin is already saying this is President Trump’s fault for defunding the NWS.

There were warnings from NWS night before actually. Whatever that means to this

Unhinged cousins cannot be persuaded. We all know.

This is a horrible tragedy but the questions are now going to be asked that should have been addressed long ago. This isn’t random like a tornado - flood modeling is very well established and accurate. If they failed to do so, it was negligent, if they knew and let kids in anyway, that’s something worse.

I used to drive bus loads of kids to a Christian camp in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula

Years ago just before we left for the long drive from Detroit, we were told that three camp staff members were killed in a car crash. A fourth survived.

We had a busload of 9-11 year old girls and we decided to not tell them about the tragedy. Camp staff would do that. (One was my daughter)

When we arrived you could cut the grief with a knife. The girls exited the bus excited about camp while the staff was berely holding it together.

About 30 minutes later the whole vibe changed. The staff came to the conclusion that the girls needed camp and so did they.

Another miracle happened. As word spread among the churches, men and women who had some connection to camp showed up in droves. They knew that regular staff would need to grieve and attend funerals so they just showed up to serve.

25 years later it still chokes me up.

My daughter has been a counselor at that camp since she was old enough to serve. She’s there now. One of my sons and my other daughter will be there serving next week. (My son is the session director.

Christian summer camp is an awesome experience for children. Many are led to know the Lord at them, including me.

Wasn’t it like 10 years or so ago that the Guadalupe River flood was even higher than this time???

If so, was this Camp Mystic flooded in this bigger flood?

If Camp Mystic was flooded in the last big flood, then why were they still allowed to be a summer campsite?
