The future of vanilla ice cream is at stake because of climate change
Yahoo! News ^ | July 4, 2025

The quintessential ice cream flavour is under threat, and many other dessert staples along with it, according to climate change researchers at the University of Costa Rica and Belgium's KU Leuven university.

Increasing climate extremes are changing the habitats of wild vanilla species — primarily found in the tropical regions of Central America — and their mainly animal pollinators, the researchers say. This, in turn, is putting global production of vanilla at risk.

In some regions, the plants may find more favourable conditions, but the insects that pollinate them may no longer find suitable habitats, according to the study published in the journal Frontiers in Plant Science in July.

The researchers used modelling to analyse the distribution areas of 11 neotropical vanilla species and seven observed bee species under two climate scenarios up to 2050: one moderate scenario with climate protection measures, and another with more conflicts and less global climate protection.

While some species could expand their potential habitats due to global warming, others face a decline of more than half. For all bee genera, the models predict a reduction in suitable habitats, with particularly severe consequences under the less climate-protective scenario.

The authors noted a limitation of their study: comprehensive information on pollination mechanisms was not available for all the species examined.

The team called for increased international collaboration and further research, aiming to enhance the resilience of vanilla cultivation and thus secure the livelihoods of many small-scale farmers in tropical regions.

"It's summer. It's really hot. People eat a lot of ice cream. Good time to trot out the 'vanilla' trope."

Is that why real vanilla extract is at the lowest price I have seen in years? What does it matter, since we’ve been told the world as we know it is going to end in a little over five. Years🤷🏼‍♂️

Hopefully they’re about to learn no one funds that BS any more. They were probably getting funded by a USAID cutout.

Dems doing a stupid pity party for their nonprofit/NGO slush funds - called ‘save the planet’?

“No more vanilla ice cream if commies/progressives don’t get slush fund cash back”...

Cry me a river.

It’s a crisis all right. But a boot stamping on a human face forever will fix it just fine.

Vanilla is an orchid and all orchids need fungi in a mychorizal relationship to grow, something that is never mentioned.

Perhaps because no one can pronounce it.

I see what you did there. You better hope your mychorizal relationships with unsuspecting flowers don't get you in trouble.

I seem to recall from my long ago organic chemistry classes that the widely used substitute for natural vanilla, vanillin, is derived from petrochemicals (oil). The climate alarmists want to ban oil so they may in fact be the villain in depriving us of vanilla flavored ice cream.

Those regions in Central America need to do something about the problem. Seems that every country that has a climate change problem blames it on the United States. What really pisses me off about this is climate is not static. It doesn’t hover over one spot and any network that would broadcast this should be sued for not explaining how climate works.

There is no manmade Climate Change and never was.

But there may be, in an unexpected (unexpected!) way.

For a few decades humanity has been cleaning up: Car emissions, cleaner coal power, int'l shipping switching to cleaner fuel etc. All this has drastically reduced particulate and sulfur dioxide emissions. Which play a part in cloud formation.

Global cloud cover has been going down. More solar radiation reaches the earth's surface instead of being reflected back into space. Presto, global warming.

By going clean, we have doomed the planet to a fiery death! LOL.

"researchers used modelling to analyse"

Of course you can prove anything with a model. The elements are chosen from those most likely to produce the desired result. In an open system like this there are hundreds of significant factors that must be and are excluded.

These articles are so much fun. Freepers can gather about and subject the morons to a verbal public stoning.

I am sorry to tell them, but one degree of change in is not going to affect the vanilla plants.

Remember, we’re talking about estimates of ‘warming’ which is 1.5C, average, over the next 80 years (or similar).

Yet people claim they can tell ‘climate change’ themselves, by looking outside, vs. last year.

This is just another ‘sky is falling’ because something ‘could’ happen. Maybe. Kinda. Probably not...”but I have to justify my funding type of science”.
