Viral Reddit Post Slams "Greedy" Bride for Demanding Each Guest Pay $500 to Attend Her Destination Wedding
Brides ^ | 7/2/25 | Gabriella Rello Duffy

The original poster notes that the couple will ultimately pocket more than the cost of the venue if everyone pays.

In a viral Reddit post on the platform's /weddingshaming thread, an unhappy guest detailed how a couple informed attendees that everyone's accommodations for a destination wedding were "taken care of" and that they'd only be responsible for flights and transportation. Then, two months before the wedding, the bride told each guest they needed to pay $500 for their stay on the "large estate" that the couple booked for the big day.

I got married by a judge but in retrospect I should’ve asked for a jury.

LMAO! I always say, "I used to be married, but I'm feeling much better now!"

This is on top of the bridal registry, I'm sure.

Mrs. Eagle and I are lucky (and thankful) that our kids either eloped or had simple Justice of the Peace Weddings. We just ponied up for the lunches or dinners afterwards plus a little cash as a gift.

Hopefully the grandkids who are getting that age will follow in their footsteps.

Screw the registry, though. We'll give them cash and they'll like it.

If they don't, we have a very simple return policy.

Big weddings often lead to short marriages.

Better than no wedding, which is the current trend. Just baby mommas.

“””Right? And the bride is probably looking at it as a starter marriage anyhow so…”””

Men want to BE married.
Women want to GET married. To so many it is all about the extravagant wedding and all the attention.

My niece was getting married in Missoula, MT. I was too sick to make the drive from Pocatello. I provided a $250 wedding gift. Nominally what it would have cost me to drive round trip. The same applied to my nephew's wedding in Reno. My road warrior days are over.

Message to the bride: Something ($$$) came up and we can’t make it. Sorry.

Well I guess the old days of weddings held at a local church and reception held at a place like a K of C are long gone.

Church basement for us. My wife made her own dress, and her sister made the cake. It was a fruitcake, which I hadn't realized was traditional. Much better than the fruitcakes that people make fun of.

To be specific, the bride, not “folks”

Then, two months before the wedding, the bride told each guest they needed to pay $500 for their stay on the "large estate" that the couple booked for the big day.

This seems more like mis-budgeting than her being greedy. She probably thought she and her fiancé could cover the cost and as other expenses piled up, realized she couldn't. Its awkward but not outrageous. Whether she should have an expensive destination wedding is other discussion.

Niece just told me that she would need at least a year and $50k for her wedding, at a minimum. Most of my friends, and I too, had relatively small weddings in simple settings. A few were in living rooms, one in a back yard. All still going strong, with grandkids (I was the exception, divorced after 8 years). Went to one at the Ritz in Monterey, gigantic ice sculptures, the works. Had to have been over $100K. Lasted three years. I like the simple church/community hall approach. Most guests like it simple too!

Cost me $1700+ to go to a liberal niece’s wedding this past March. Funny how she (an HR person) posted on Facebook or something that people should check their white privilege. Nary a brown skin at her 200 person event.

It’s a starter marriage for her, but that starter divorce will likely prevent him from a second try.
