George W Bush has issued a rare critique of Donald Trump over his shuttering of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
The former president joined Barack Obama and U2 singer Bono in an emotional video call farewell with staff at the agency on Monday when it officially ceased operations.
After six decades, the humanitarian organisation created by former president John F Kennedy to promote US national security by boosting prosperity and goodwill abroad, is being absorbed into the State Department under the supervision of Marco Rubio.
Speaking to thousands of agency staff on the video conference, Mr Bush took a thinly veiled swipe at cuts to USAID’s HIV and aids programme. The initiative, launched under his Republican administration, is credited with saving 25 million lives around the world.
“You’ve showed the great strength of America through your work – and that is your good heart,’’ Mr Bush told agency staffers in a recorded message. “Is it in our national interests that 25 million people who would have died now live? I think it is, and so do you.”
USAID was one of the first agencies fiercely targeted by Department of Government Efficiency (Doge) cuts to government spending, with Elon Musk branding it a “criminal organisation”.

After Dubya spoke his brother said, “Please clap.”
Ruh roh!
Dubya just watched some of his faucets get turned off!
I thought he sold the ranch and now lives the good life in Dallas, a very liberal city.
He’s just jealous because President Trump is a can-do guy who doesn’t let BS opposition stand in his way. He gets things done.
Bush and Obama are on the same deep-state team.
But is U2’s Bono really that stupid to believe the USAID actually “helps” poor countries?
Or is he on the deep-state team also?
They are to be found on the news media.
Great post!
I made the mistake of volunteering for his campaigns. Odd how his wife killed her ex-boyfriend in a very strange car accident in Texas and odder yet, how most of the police records disappeared from the county court. Odd how Bush, who knew about nothing about Iraq, got us into a war that made no sense and put the US in a strategically weaker position than before after 10,000 dead Americans, hundreds of thousands of dead Iraqi civilians and the disappearance of the Iraqi Christians. Odd how Bush, Sr., was in Dallas on the morning of November 22, 1963, denied it for decades, and then made up some crazy covering story that he was compelled to use to explain his being there.
Son of Spook says what?
‘Keep out the Bushes’ - Jesse Jackson
GW Bush. His “Patriot Act” was the most unpatriotic thing ever, and the beginning of the slippery slope of kissing Muslim arse!
Despicable!!!
Why were we all such slow learners when it came to GWB?
GWB’s enduring legacy is that nobody from that family will be electable in the U.S. for at least another hundred years.
My most severe concept was how EAGER he was to get involved in a Gulf War. I sided with the people of IRAQ and saw many videos of soldiers in military vehicles being pretty obnoxious to the local folks on camels.
George and his progeny are going to miss their private slush funds... I mean non-govenmental charitable organizations.
“Is it in our national interests that 25 million people who would have died now live?”
...it is in our interest to have the Rule of Law. These 25 million are breaking it. Along with taking jobs, SS and disability benefits, American taxpayer “free” money, food, housing, education and medical. Lots are raping, assaulting, murdering, stealing, destroying and squatting. So STFUGB!
Me, too. One was to one of my kids.
A “rare critique”? Been living under a rock, Cameron?
To say that W is a backstabbing weasel RINO would diminish Paul Ryan’s contributions to the Republican party. He doesn’t even have a hat, let alone any cattle.
It was a choice between who was a less worse candidate.
I wonder who/what the CIA will use for a cut out now USAID is gone.
