I fled NYC for Florida — Sorry, Mamdani-fearing Democrats, we’re full!
NY Post ^ | 330 Jun, 2025 | Karol Markowicz

Since Zohran Mamdani won last week’s Democratic primary and put himself in pole position to become New York City’s next mayor, a fresh cohort of Gothamites seems to be eyeing the exit ramp toward the Sunshine State.

This Floridian says: Sorry, we’re full.

For more than five years now, Florida has been the top destination for fleeing northerners, émigrés seeking something more than milder weather and lower taxes.

These new Floridians arrived to join a freedom movement led by Gov. Ron DeSantis, escaping the insane blue-state policies that the COVID-19 pandemic brought to a head.

The newcomers — myself included — made the state redder than it had ever been before.

In the 2024 election, President Donald Trump romped in the formerly deep-blue Miami Dade County and turned Palm Beach County purple, losing it by just a single percentage point.

Pundits pointed to the increasingly Republican Hispanic vote, and that was a factor. But the energized newbies made the shift a GOP tsunami.

To this day many Floridians habitually send real-estate listings to their ideologically aligned friends up north — those who longed to join the “Great Migration” but whose work or family obligations made them stay put.

When those friends complained about their deteriorating schools, the congestion tax or rising crime, we’d send back an alligator gif, a Florida flag emoji or a video of tough-talking DeSantis describing the fate of protesters who dare to block Florida traffic.

Come join us, we’d say.

Now a different group is looking in our direction — and we’re not feeling so encouraging.

These people didn’t think the COVID restrictions that kept NYC children in masks outdoors through 2022 were too much.

They were fine with cashless bail and New York’s sanctuary city status.

Boys in girls’ sports? Who cares! They vote blue

Back in the 1980s, Sarah Brady of the Brady Center gun control group hoped to make Florida a gun ban state with all the New Yorkers moving there back then. Beware they may bring their NY ideas to Florida!
Colorado has already been Californicated, what they were warned about in 1974. “DON’T CALIFORNICATE COLORADO!”
Well, it has been, and bad!

...good thought....but here in Central Texas, the Austin area probably excluded, there has been a sizable influx of folks from The Peoples Democratic Republic of California and the greater number of whom are not liberal, but quite conservative...that’s why they left CA in the first place...jus’ sayin’ ...

If Mami wins, NYC will become a war zone rapidly. They will lose the police and all city services quickly. I would not want to have a retail or service business in the City.

I live in NY. Breaking NY State into two parts would be the best thing that could ever happen.

It’s the reddest it’s been. Even the 90’s, this was a blue state. It’s deep now.

John D. MacDonald wrote the Travis McGee novels from 1964 through 1985. Even then, McGee regularly mused about how crowded and overpopulated Florida had become. 40-60 years ago!

Dearest New Yorkers: when you move, move to Massachusetts, Illinois, California or Hawaii. Do not move to any state not on my list.

Yankees moving to Georgia are ruining our state. Move to Florida.

No!!!

Yankees come down here and bitch about everything. They turn around and head north, but make it only to the Carolinas. Soon (if not already) Wilmington and Greenville SC will morph into little Austins, a blue pustule on the rump of an otherwise fine red state.

Those New Yorkers who moved to Florida, didn’t like it and moved back up to the Carolinas are called half-backs. They bring their destructive politics with them.

I live in the Stuart area (actually, Jensen Beach, actually PSL, but I quibble). Stuart is the most conservative place, by far, I have ever lived. Jensen Beach is probably conservative but the people are too drunk to be concerned about it. PSL used to be blue because of the minorities from the pit of Ft. Pierce, but even PSL has become only blue-tinged red, and Ft. Pierce is rapidly undergoing gentrification.

I’m from Kentucky originally, moved to ‘the Stuart area’ in 2021. I have an anti-Yankee bias and cannot stand the Boston accent. Truth be told, most of them are very nice. I work part-time in Western Kentucky. Their accent delights the senses. And the young women are hot, if they’re not fat and/or tatted up.

Author is wearing rose colored glasses. FL is not much better than anywhere else. Desantis has only done minimally what he has to to make himself look good. A real governor would have secured his states borders upon taking office. Desantis has yet to do it many years after riding coat tails into office. Sure he got reelected but he is truly only a wishful thinking “great governor” on the part of his states residents since he has not actual made any real or lasting helpful changes. Desantis is a self serving person, just trying to run for president again. His core is rotten. He pretends, says and does things for show, not because he really wants or cares to do what is right. God keep him in FL and don’t let him ooze his rotten core on our country. All his money pals would control him, USA would be over for sure.

Nice area. We drove around; from Singer Island North to Vero Beach just to "investigate" the area as we hadn't spent time in that area of Florida. Very nice area all the way up.

The syndrome of the past before Desantis- “Honey, it is so pleasant here since we moved to Florida with no income tax and minimal crime. Don’t we just love it here? Florida could be perfect-we just need more services.”
God save us from a repeat with this new batch of refugees.

It is hard to believe but Florida is now more conservative than Georgia. The Sunshine State has two Republican senators, vs. two Democratic senators for the Peach State. Trump won Florida in 2024 by 13 percentage points; he won Georgia by two percentage points. Going back to 2016, he won Florida by one percentage point and Georgia by five. The Atlanta area political mafia is more effective. However, it is likely that Florida gets a better class of Yankee than does Georgia. The Florida migrants are skewed toward retirees from the Northeast who dislike the high taxes, crime, and deteriorating infrastructure of places like NYC and Philadelphia. The Georgia bound Yankees are often younger professionals more likely brainwashed by Northern colleges to think in a politically correct manner.

I’m 10 miles from the villages down 75 in Leesburg, but not in the city. It’s pretty red. Although, not red enough to elect crazy town Laura loomer.
