Windows are a major source of energy loss in buildings, a sector that accounts for nearly 40 percent of global energy use, as heat entering through glass surfaces significantly reduces heating and cooling efficiency.
A research team at KAIST has developed a pedestrian-friendly smart window technology.
The smart window not only significantly reduces heating and cooling energy consumption in urban buildings, but also addresses the long-standing problem of light pollution in densely populated areas.

They are called Bricks.
We’re all going to freeze to death.
Math fail, the reduction is 48.9 F, not 80+F. 137.6-88.7
Arithmetic is beyond science reporters.
As I thought, Ag, Silver is a prime component….with the Silver mining deficits the past four years, Ag is now a good bet….ar $36 t/oz no where to go but up.
“ The silver market is currently experiencing a significant deficit, with demand outpacing supply for the fifth consecutive year. This ongoing shortfall is primarily driven by strong industrial demand, particularly in sectors like solar technology and electronics.…” Hi, Ho Silver, away we go!
The Dramacrats will freeze with full diapers.
I call reporters “failed English majors”, because they couldn’t get a sinecure job in their primary language.
“...absorb some light and heat.”
Absorb? Where does the energy go? Does the widow get hot?
“…heat entering through glass surfaces significantly reduces heating and cooling efficiency.”
Heat entering during the winter is good. There has been a lot of research in past decades on passive heating tech and designs.
OT but related: the author has no clue what “efficiency” means.
I told my brother to have some silver as backup years ago - but of course he ignored me.

Lots of other things “reporters” have no clue about.
Hopefully the widow gets hot, and that she’s hot.
How do you make a Venetian blind?
REOPEN THE MINES AROUND VIRGINIA CITY, NEV
The Georgians in England installed window shutters that could be closed up rather tightly from the inside of the house. There are similar shutters in some houses on Capitol Hill in DC.
A Bluetooth transmitter in a belt could open and close interior window shutters. I’m in the master bedroom. The shutters in the other rooms in my house would be closed.
On really cold days, both shutters in the master bedroom might be closed and LED lights turned on. In summer late afternoons, the west window shutters might be closed.
In my youth, there were streets in Albany, NY with elm tree canopies in the summertime.
Ho hum. I’m waiting for slow glass to be developed.
"With a conventional glass window, the indoor temperature soared to 137.6 degree Fahrenheit (58.7°C) in just 45 minutes. In contrast, when the RECM window was set to Mode III, the temperature was significantly lower at 88.7 Fahrenheit (31.5°C)—showing a remarkable reduction of about 80.96 Fahrenheit (27.2°C)."That actually reads like a section of the original paper, but it's behind a paywall and the freely available sections don't include that info. It's to laugh (again) at "about 80.96." That's a lot of significant digits for the rough "about" measure.
"KAIST" is the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology national research university located in Daedeok Innopolis, Daejeon, South Korea.
What is a "Pedestrian-Friendly" window? Are regular windows so completely transparent that people walk into them all the time.
The oldsters were smart.
