I ask whether friends and family have heard the stories previously and they assure me they haven’t...but sometimes I think they are just mollifying me.
Yes. The context, tone of voice, and look on the face determines the intention of the user.
I have always liked the Aussie use of the phrase “Good on ya.” which is used in exactly the same way as “Bless your heart.”
Of all the tawdry nonsense and sophistry to be hauling up before the grunting masses - much of this just flies over the heads of most people, and raises the spidey sense in many of the rest.
There may be a kernel of truth down in there somewhere, but darned if I can dig it out.
# 4 ) My ex was a walking, talking cliche. She could not communicate otherwise. Furthermore if she heard some intelligent person use a new cliche which she had never heard before then it immediately became a part of her vocabulary. ;-)

Over generalizations.. when someone who’s never done the job says “ all you have to do is”. Ok, go replace the starter on anewer BMW V8. All you have to do is remove the intake manifold. Easy!
