If someone uses big words to sound smart, they’re probably not. If someone speaks in clichés, they might be lacking original thought.

Understanding human communication isn’t always simple.

In fact, navigating the labyrinth of human conversation requires more than just a good ear. It also requires an understanding of certain speech patterns and phrases.

Now, some folks have a knack for this. They can hear a few words and immediately gauge the intelligence of the speaker.

In this article, let’s delve into 8 phrases that, more often than not, are used by people with below-average intelligence in everyday conversation.

I get that reality TV is insipid and people who like it too much tend to be morons, but how is “binge watching reality TV” a phrase? That’s a behavior.

Also, similar issue with “struggling with abstract concepts”, although it’s closer to a phrase.

1) Overuse of intensifiers

Like, you know, like literally. Totally literally.

"2) Repeating the same stories"

This is a poker rule -- you find a loser like this, find him again and again.

I disagree with the explanation of number eight. I have always believed that gray issues were invented by man to excuse the evil we do. There are no gray issues with God.

She is unfortunately, genuinely stupid. Her parents were clever. She is not.

I did a 50th anniversary website for my high school so many years ago that I’ve become out of touch with everyone I contacted back then. THAT makes me feel old. I just cross my fingers and hope that they’re all still looking down and not looking up, as my 8 year older brother says, and as happy and healthy as they are in my memory.

Overuse of intensifiers

I hate how people destroy the unique meaning of words by using them as intensifiers.

The word "literally" has come to mean "very."

You cannot make an English phrase... a language issue

A descriptor about a behavior?

Not to put too fine a point on it, but I stopped listening to him when he was still on local radio here in the ATL area, non-syndicated. I couldn’t take it.

I agree the author sounds like a educated snob.

I know plenty of intelligent people that are simply lazy in their speech.

Raised in poverty but very well self educated.

Irregardless of what you say, at the end of the day, it all evens out.

I know this because I'm smart and you're not.

Using clichés as a crutch

They don't even use the clichés properly. I've heard people use terms like "sour grapes" and "let them eat cake" in inappropriate ways. They just speak the phrase in a snarky manner to indicate dislike or disapproval.

Without reading the article, I am predicting this person is likely a complete Leftist.

But, wearing their faults on their backs, Leftists won’t see themselves in that list.

Yup—see the insults here way too often.

It is very easy to disagree without calling someone names—even when you don’t like what the other person is saying.

I am retired—but the word I hated most was “stakeholder”.

Usually it means someone they plan on ignoring.

Lol.

My current slang anathemas are, “clapped back” and “I’m loving ...” [whatever].
