Rep. Carlos Giménez plans to tour Florida facilities holding immigration detainees following a Miami Herald investigation into harsh conditions and use of force at the Federal Detention Center in Miami. The federal lawmaker said that he first learned about the reported conditions at FDC Miami when a journalist from the Washington Journal’s C-Span program asked him about the Herald story this morning. “I will be investigating those conditions,” said the Miami Republican during an interview on Capitol Hill. “Right now is the first I’ve heard of it.” The Federal Detention Center in downtown Miami has been housing detainees in civil immigration custody since February, when the Federal Bureau of Prisons signed a contract with United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement to house immigrants in prisons amid overcrowding at ICE detention centers. Six detainees told the Herald that officers had launched crowd-control grenades and sprayed what appeared to them as rubber bullets or pellets into a room with about 50 detainees in April in response to their protests over lack of water, food, and medication. The detainees said that they had begun to overflow toilets to get the attention of officers, and the room was full of water. At least two detainees filed lawsuits about the incident in May, which were signed by at least 30 detainees who say they were also present when it happened. “I keep reliving the explosions over and over again,” one wrote in the lawsuit. A judge dismissed the lawsuit without prejudice due to procedural errors. “It all felt like unnecessary torture.” Giménez said [...that he...] would “protest to the administration” if he found anything inappropriate. “If I find something that is wrong, or shouldn’t be, I’ll be the first to come out and say, ‘by the way I found something, this is what’s going on.’”

Gimenez is reliably MAGA. He wouldn't be visiting the detention center in a million years were it not for a tide of pushback from his Latin base. This isn't to say it's the wrong initiative, but clearly there will be a political price to pay in '26.
I hope Carlos he-mayonaise has a nice visit.
“Gimenez is reliably MAGA.”
No. He’s not.
Carlos A. Gimenez (R-FL) is one of the worst RINOs in congress.

More ‘harsh’ than rape and murder??
And couldn’t be bothered to do the same for the J6 political prisoners.
Put ‘em under the overpasses, surrounded by chain link, and concertina wire. It was good enough for the Mariel boatlift riff-raff.
Just as long as they’re deported.
Well, folks who have to wait in line at the DMV for more than 10 minutes consider it "harsh conditions", but they don't get visits from reporters or "microphone moth" congress critters...
Oh no! Harsh conditions! Harsh I tell you. You know, Biden gave them rooms in posh hotels. They are our guests! They should not have to suffer under harsh conditions like not having the sheets changed every day or fresh towels in the bathroom. Cmon people!
Stopped reading right there.
It says they stopped up the toilets and had water overflow and were whining about it.
Live in the shit you create ...
Look at his name. Guess what his base is composed of...
Does this guy investigate harsh conditions at federal and state prisons? Or only shows up for photo ops.
Good. I hope you wake up screaming every night. It serves you right for starting a riot.
I don’t want “harsh” conditions but the aren’t designed as long- term “free” (taxpayer- paid) public housing developments or as posh Hyatt Hotel retirement communities.
Occupants should be repatriated or deported within a day or two at any event, depending on logistics.
To me, that paints a picture of a Rep who votes middle-Left on most votes, but stay towards the Right on the important votes. I'm assuming FL-28 (Monroe county, and some of Miami-Dade County... basically everything south and west of Miami) is probably very purple, and he's trying to make everyone happy by playing both sides.
Carlos won in 2024, by a very comfortable 65-34 margin... despite the voter registrations being only +2% GOP in FL-28.
Despite articles like the one posted, the political price will be paid by the Democrats, not the GOP. Polling shows that the immigration crackdown has dramatically increased GOP support among legal immigrants. On the whole, the criminals and crazies among the Biden immigration wave are despised and feared by the Latin Community.
Funny how the Dems have no curiosity about the DC, NY or ATL nails.
Look at his district, FL-28. It's everything south and west of Miami, including the Keys.
FL-28 is 73% Hispanic, 15% White and 9% Black.
Despite FL-28 being only +2% GOP in registrations, Carlos won 65-34 against each of the last 3 Dem opponents (including the incumbent)... and the 2020 opponent was also Hispanic.
FL-28 was mostly Blue from 2012-2018, but not by huge margins. Hillary 2016 was the biggest winner, at 56-40. In 2020, it went from Trump by +6 (53-47)... in 2022 and 2024, it was overwhelmingly Red (65-35-ish).
It seems to me that he has helped bring the entire District pretty strongly to the Right (as the rest of the nation has been slowly trending).
So they stopped up the toilets and are now complaining about water on the floor.
