Jack Daniel’s maker reveals surprising reason why Americans are drinking less whiskey

Executives from Jack Daniel’s parent company, Brown-Forman Corp., warned that the business is seeing pressure from cannabis, weight-loss drugs and lackluster demand from Generation Z.

Brown-Forman CEO Lawson Whiting told analysts on an earnings call that the “same big three” is the reason that there has been lower demand for liquor.

“We’ve been saying that for 1.5 years now. And I know on the sell-side that the world seems to be a little bit split on the extent of the pressure that it’s putting on our category. We’d be naive if we didn’t say that there isn’t some pressure coming from those,” Whiting told analysts.

The economy is also playing a factor, with Whiting noting that consumers don’t have as much dispensable income and are prioritizing vacations and lodging.

They go to the grocery store, I think in some cases, spirits has fallen out of the basket a little bit.

And that isn’t obviously great,” Whiting said.

However, he said that spirits are still taking market share from beer and wine. He also noted that while premiumization isn’t the same as it was, “it’s been kind of stagnant a little bit,” which he said is mostly good news.

“I think the consumers – they haven’t traded down necessarily,” he said.

Oversaturated. Gen Z is not a big fan of breweries. So some of them are closing.

Not oversaturated initially but because the market has shrunk so yes oversaturated now because you are correct Gen Z is not a big fan of actually getting off the couch, touching grass and getting away from the glowing screen.

A six pack of beer is near 15 now where I am. For 10 more bucks I can get a decent bottle of vodka. I avoid purines from gout (controlled by diet so far) so I don’t drink beer much.

But in regard to the story. Jack Daniel’s regular is painful. Gentleman Jack though....

Never tasted it, not sure I’ve even smelled it.
Don’t like beer.
What’s this about pumpkins? Don’t like them either.
Thank heavens there is chocolate to keep me occupied.

10 years ago, nope. The Demographics were different. Baby Boomers/Gen X/Millennials.

Now Gen Z is starting to emerge and they're very different. Breweries will have to offer them something different if they want to attract them as customers.

The cost of soda has become outrageous. Not that long ago you could get 4 12packs for $10 maybe even $8...now, $9 each buy 2 get one free? Ridiculous...

Yep. They are also more into CBD/THC usage and vaping than drinking

I hate the taste of all alcohol personally. But to each their own.

Most things are always about money. For a lot of people, going out for drinks and dinner are way too expensive anymore.

my young friends who drink prefer the clear Zima-like flavored soda-pop mildly alcoholic beverages ...

[Zima was about two decades ahead of its time]

going out to eat was always too expensive for the average person to do regularly.

They were just too poorly educated financially to realize they were never wealthy enough to have a chef and servants cook food, serve it too them and clean up afterwards.

You show me someone who eats out daily, and I will show you someone who would otherwise have been a millionaire by retirement.

Jack Daniels is too expensive. Jim Beam serves the same purpose for 2/3rds of the cost.

I am not a Whiskey/Bourbon/Scotch drinker. But I lost all respect for JD when the company reduced the alcohol content of the black label #7 to that of the green label, citing consumer preference. If the consumers wanted LESS alcohol, they would have bought the green label in the first place! Liars. Cheats.

Following is backup from perplexity.ai:

Jack Daniel's reduced the alcohol content in its black label version twice in recent decades. The first reduction occurred in 1987, when the proof was lowered from 90 (45% alcohol by volume) to 86 (43% alcohol by volume). The second reduction happened in 2002, when the black label was further reduced to 80 proof (40% alcohol by volume). Both changes were made without significant public announcement, and the latter reduction in 2002 applied to all generally available Jack Daniel's products.

My neighbor, she is German and her husband is ex military. It would surprise you how many people used to eat out daily.

Yes I’ve heard that too. My cardiologist wanted to put me on a GLP drug to help me stop sniffing glue.

The Gen Z in my own family seem more interested in craft beer than hard liquor.

I’ve never liked Jack Daniels, I much prefer a good single malt Scotch or Jameson’s Irish whiskey.

Got sick drinking from Seagram’s 7 in my youth and just the aroma of whiskey churns my stomach.

Clear liquor such as rum, gin or vodka are all fine and mix well.

Wine, take it or leave it.

Beer, drank a lot in my youth, rarely drink beer now , although a cold one with a meal every so often is okay.
