Very mysterious behavior by wifi Router, please comment
today | self

Posted on 06/02/2025 4:49:50 PM PDT by Bobbyvotes

I have been using this TP-Link router for 9 years. In the beginning years, it ran without any problems or freezes. Last 6 months, it froze once every day like clockwork. Every morning I had to reboot by unplugging and plugging power. Usually it only froze once every day. On rare occasions it froze twice in a day but that was rare. I was getting ready to buy a new one thinking it is just getting old..

But.... Strangely, during last two weeks it has not frozen or crashed even once! Nothing has changed. Same PC's and phones and security cameras in place for ever. Every morning I check if wi-fi is on, and to my surprise it is running. I am totally confused. I am guessing something changed by Xfinity.

If you know how to access your router’s log - assuming it has one - you can monitor access attempts or DDOS attacks.

More than likely your IP came up on a list of a bot network’s scanning and either access attempts or DDOS attack caused your router to lock up. The regularity strongly reinforces that assertion.

Dumping tp link for a Netgear - as suggested by SkyDancer - is one good move.

Another is to request a WAN IP change by your provider. Things might lighten up.

Regardless, check your router’s log regularly, use a random password generator and keep BOTH your LAN password and WIFI at 18 characters. I know it’s a pain for connected devices, but you have to balance security and convenience.

I doubt that you’ve been subjected to anything more nefarious than any of the rest of us have experienced, but...

1. Strong passwords
2. New router
3. New WAN IP
4. Best: 1, 2 & 3.

Definitely time for a new router. The one you have now likely can not handle the bandwidth.

Haha my PC is an old Dell tower I bought used. Probably 10 years old, hardly a super-computer.

*****************************************************

Four Dell refurb desktops from Amazon, an old Raspberry PI4, A couple of laptops that were given to me. Had to change a hard drive in one of the Dells.
Only new machine have bought since I can remember is wife’s machine, and it’s years old.

I put Linux Mint on it - got tired of fixing the %$*&^%(& windows at least once a week.

[[put Linux Mint on it - got tired of fixing the %$*&^%(& windows at least once a week]]

Smae here. Thougn i triple boot with windows 10 and 11, but they arr strickly for offline work- linux mint is my main online os, and i use it probably 95% of the time- just got tired of a,ways having tk fix winodws, long update times, broken updayes, etc. Atill get b,ue screens of death with both windows versions now, but having ghrm not connect to net saves me from always gefting bsod’s (and then having to research whay caused the bsod, and easting time on those frequent issues and solutions-

When i first tried linux, eay back in the day, i velt jt was too complicsted and xwas z,ways needing fixing. And windows juat ran well, with hardly any isues- nkw it is the exact opposite- windows breaks all the time, znd linux. Just works nearly f,awlesslyź but still need windows hnfortunately for some heavy duty programs thqt only run on. Windows 10 or better.

9 years old, time to get a new one and up grade. Try to not buy another Chinese router.

Get rid of TP-Link. It’s Chinese trash, and who knows what they embedded in it.

Yep, TPLINK's consistently low prices and Chinese origins make me leery of it.

Haven't 86'd my TPLINK managed gigabit switch yet, tho. < |:(~

Are you tethering via cell phone. The last few android updates have messed with the thethering links. I use Easy Tether Pro with my RV TP Link and it started that a year or so ago. My guess at the request of tmobile. There is a macro you can run to constantly reboot ot the usb connection to reset it.

Ours started similar stuff recently and ATT came out and put in new equipment. I think it just wears out from time to time.
