KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — A Ukrainian drone attack has destroyed more than 40 Russian planes deep in Russia’s territory, Ukraine’s Security Service said on Sunday, while Moscow pounded Ukraine with missiles and drones just hours before a new round of direct peace talks in Istanbul.

A military official, who spoke with the Associated Press on condition of anonymity to disclose operational details, said the far-reaching attack took more than a year and a half to execute and was personally supervised by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The military source said it was an “extremely complex” operation, involving the smuggling of first-person view, or FPV, drones to Russia, where they were then placed in mobile wooden houses.

“Later, drones were hidden under the roofs of these houses while already placed on trucks. At the right moment, the roofs of the houses were remotely opened, and the drones flew to hit Russian bombers,” the source said.

Social media footage shared by Russian media appeared to show the drones rising from inside containers while other panels lay discarded on the road. One clip appeared to show men climbing onto a truck in an attempt to halt the drones.

The drones hit 41 planes stationed at military airfields on Sunday afternoon, including A-50, Tu-95 and Tu-22M aircraft, the official said. Moscow has previously used Tupolev Tu-95 and Tu-22 long-range bombers to launch missiles at Ukraine, while A-50s are used to coordinate targets and detect air defenses and guided missiles.

The Security Service of Ukraine said that the operation, which it codenamed “Web”, had destroyed 34% of Russia’s fleet of air missile carriers with damages estimated at $7 billion. The claim could not be independently verified.

Russia’s Defense Ministry in a statement confirmed the attacks, which damaged aircraft and sparked fires on air bases...

Russia has already made the case that it considers the use of US/NATO weapons and ISR systems to stage attacks on Russia will be considered acts of aggression against Russia by the United States, UK, France. and Germany.

Russia has also made comments that it reserves the right to respond “appropriately”

Separate references have been made to the use of nuclear weapons in the Ukraine conflict..

Seems pretty simple and clear cut to me. What part of this do you not understand?

Russia is not going to leave Ukraine. Period.

To think otherwise is simply ridiculous and no one, not even Ukrainian Generals are seriously making the case that this is going to happen.

More and more , the Ukrainian military including top level generals are acknowledging that the Ukraine is going to have to make substantial territorial concession to end the war.

Is Trump really in charge?

I'm getting impression that Trump (and the American people) have about as much control of this country that Biden had-- very little. The big difference is that Biden was oblivious to the fact that he was a figurehead.

16 months. I will not be surprised if other attacks are in process. They found a vulnerability and took advantage, it seems likely to me they have other vulnerabilities to take advantage of.

Makes you wonder how many suitcase nukes CCP military aged men smuggled in through the Darien Gap to stash in "mobile wooden houses" throughout the country.

It would be quite easy for them to figure out how to do this: they've studied how Russia is evading the sanctions, the transportation routes, etc., and they know Russia and Russians far better than we do.

The only question of direct Western involvement would be any satellite coms that were used, and, if so, how they were used and provided.

Russia made… references, comments, a case… it’s easy enough to see, what makes you think I don’t understand?

My comments were simple what do you not understand? If Russia does not like being attacked by the country they attacked they need only to leave. If he leaves and then is attacked on Russian soil he would have a case for the defensive use of nukes. But do you seriously believe anyone besides his no limits friends wants Russia?

If he wishes to stay and attack then he will be attacked in return.

A man who fights with little green army men, who cannot sustain a navy and now an air force is hard to take serious. Nukes and all. The only use Putin has for nukes is to pacify his own people. Rebel against me and I can provoke your utter devastation.

Most peace talks take a good amount of time - especially when neither side has currently lost.

The main sticking point is the land. Who gets what.

1: A return to the prewar boundaries would be good.
2: Keep what you have.
3: Keep what you had by date x.
4: Cede more land - the entire four provinces Russia currently demands.

Right after the Graham visit. Who couldn’t call this “Coincidence” before it happened?

The NWO and MIC is just not going to let this war die... No way, they are going to fight Trump’s efforts every step of the way.

And your impression is extremely astute. I knew they were going to hamstring him since before the election...

The only thing I find strange is that there is somebody who says they are completely unaware of the vast amounts of pictures and video showing combat as it happens in the war between Russian and Ukraine.

There is more video of this war than any previous war.

Video of the drones launching from a truck

Drone operator's view of the attack as seen by an FPV that hits a parked Russian bomber

What some civilians saw

There are thousands and thousands of videos showing what is happening in the war, including those from drones showing the exact person they chased and killed, or the bunker they entered. There are also thousands of videos taken by soldiers showing an attack in progress, or the aftermath, or just bad luck.

These guys just had a bad day

Then what?

They might find out the the SBU has operatives inside their nuclear operations, or that Ukraine has some warheads too.

The Ukraine attacking Russia with US weapons, controlled by US military techs and targeted by US ISR and targeting systems is a completely different issue The point is that Russia may just be heading to the UN Security council to formally make the point that the US, UK, Germany and France are co belligerents with the Ukraine in direct attacks against Russian nuclear weapons facilities. That might just make Western forces and facilities around the world as legitimate military targets for Russian reprisal attacks

Take your statements and substitute "North Korean troops," "Iranian drones," and "Belarusian bases" for "U.S. tech" and "U.S. systems," and exchange "Ukraine" for "Russia" as the victim.

By your logic, they (N.Korea, Iran, Belarus) could then also be labeled "cobelligerents" and then targeted by hypersonic missiles, etc.

"What's good for the goose..."

The truth is that two - count 'em: two! - nuclear powers are attacking Ukraine, and a third country allowed itself to be used as a staging ground / platform for a surprise attack. The fact is that Russia also targeted Ukrainian atomic energy facilities.

There is nothing that you accuse Ukraine (and its friends) of doing that Putin, Kim "Rocketman" Jong Il, and the "mad mullahs" of Teheran are not also guilty of in spades.

If this keeps going on, the Russians may just start using tactical nuclear weapons in the Ukraine

You are using the ultimate "sledgehammer argument" - a clear instance of the argumentum ad baculum FALLACY. If we adopt that twisted logic, then we (the collective West) have to allow Russia to do anything it pleases, because - NUKES!!!

That argument didn't "pull" back in the 1950s and 60s, when appeasers and fellow-travelers in the West were demanding that we cave to all Soviet demands or else they might nuke us, and it doesn't "pull" now, either.

Even if it is a proxy war what is Russia’s plea? “Please tell Ukraine's allies to stop supporting them so we can have Ukraine to ourselves.”

Bingo!

This endless talk of it being a "proxy war" (who the Hell cares?!) and the possibility of U.S. "boots on the ground" is growing tiresome.

Putin's Russia is conducting a bloody, unprovoked attack, invasion, and annexation of a peaceful, sovereign European nation - one whose sovereignty and borders he was forced to recognize and uphold by treaty, but whose very right to existence he now vehemently denies.

He enlisted the help of Nork troops whose boots are undeniably "on the ground." Happily, one military ally - the Bashar al-Assad regime in Syria - has already been neutralized. But "Rocketman" Kim Jong Un is still pouring troops into the "meat-grinder" and Iran is still providing drone tech.

Nevertheless, the Putin-apologists here at Free Republic demand that Russia be handled with "kid gloves."

Un-freaking-believable!

Sure, the Ukraine is absolutely free to attack Russia at it's its leisure, no dispute there. [...] The point is that Russia may just be heading to the UN Security council to formally make the point that [...]

Oh, no! Not the U.N. Security Council!!!

Anything but that!

I don’t know much but I guess Mr. Putin has a big surprise coming for Mr. Zelenssky’s Ukraine. My bet is going to be bad, real bad. If Mr. Z wants to sidetrack the Peace Deal—He did a good job.Rumors that Trump knew about the attacks and OKed them is just icying on the cake. WW III is a coming. Get your flags and toilet paper now.

Un-American fear-monger! The 1950s called and wants its "Better Red than Dead" sign back!

Ukraine just destroyed approx. one-third of Putin's missile-carrying long-range aircraft, and you are unhappy about it !Ukraine destroyed a legitimate military target with no loss of civilian lives - and you are salivating at the thought of Russian reprisals!

It is evident where your true loyalties lie!

You don't know about the Darien Gap and the hundreds of thousands of illegals that passed through it on their way to the US?

Do you live under a rock?

A record 400K migrants have crossed the treacherous Darién jungle to reach the U.S.

Reporter spent New Year's Eve tracking military-age Chinese streaming through Darien Gap
