Breitbart ^ | 05/31/2025 | Lucas Nolan

Departments of Motor Vehicles (DMVs) in multiple states are alerting drivers about a new wave of fraudulent text messages designed to trick recipients into revealing their personal and financial information.

As digital scams are becoming increasingly sophisticated, the latest round of phishing attempts is targeting unsuspecting drivers across the United States. DMVs in at least three states — New York, Florida, and California — have reported a surge in fake text messages that employ fear tactics to deceive recipients into divulging sensitive data.

It is indeed.

And after seeing families ripped apart because of the greed of one or more of the family, it’s disgusting.

A death in the family reveals a person’s true character in ways nothing else can.

Better yet, don’t answer your phone. If it is legit, they will leave a message.

I’m sorry, I feel bad for people who get tricked like this, but how does it make any sense that you’d pay a fine for missing jury duty (or whatever it might be) with gift cards?

Actually, your solution may be the best one. As one guy said about end times bible prophesy, if someone says they have figured it out, they have no idea what they are talking about.

i.e. the more “you have to do this NOW” you are hearing, the more likely it is a scam.

Exactly…it WASNT a text. All important official communications come via usps…or a cop knocking at (and sometimes down) your door. Anything else I ignore!

> Whenever gift cards are asked for or required you know right away it’s a scam. <

True that. But the scammers have now come up with other names for gift cards. “Electronic voucher cards”, and the like.

It must be fooling a decent number of people, because the scammers are still doing it.

As a side note, the Feds need to set up a small agency dedicated to call-flooding these scam centers. Shut ‘em down, one way or another.

Whenever merchandise is asked for you know it’s a scam. Those kids in India or Pakistan are getting more creative.

I don’t know what can be done about this sort of thing...

Get rid of the phone. Use one of those nationwide walkie talkies to keep it touch with family.

When people pull crap like that, I deliberately go out of my way to not do business with them ever.

I don’t trust them at that point.

...register with the National Do Not Call List...

Worse than worthless. The scammers use it as a source, not a deterrent.

Just today I got a fake text from DMV and another from Prime. The Prime one looked very real.

Whenever they claim trouble , I ask that first. Most have no idea so they hang up.

"The scammer says the officer is about to come for you so you need to pay the fine. Has to be paid right now or else. They come up with some reason they can't take a credit card.
So once the gift cards have been purchased they want to have the numbers off the cards which, of course, they will cash immediately.
Takes a bunch of naiveté to believe them, but most people haven't experienced anything like this before. And it doesn't take a high percentage of these to work to make good money.

Your grandson/granddaughter is in jail, and needs bail money.

My sister was nearly a victim of this type of scam. It was very elaborate. Some guy visited my brother in Thailand. He had a lot of info on him, and convinced him that they had known each other in the USAF, in Vietnam. At that, bro gave him his life history since.

A few weeks later, someone called my sister, claiming to be my brother. Sister said that the voice sounded just like our bro, had enough details to convince her. Said he was in The Philippines and had been arrested for something, needed $2000 right away or he would go to jail. Gave a location in Manila to wire the money to.

Sister was all set to head to the closest Western Union desk, when my nephew told her that our bro was currently on social media from his home in Thailand. Nephew saved his mother $2000 just in the knick of time.

“Use one of those nationwide walkie talkies to keep it touch with family.”

Such a thing exists? Same as satellite phone?

A little off topic but I’ve had 4 fake Elon Musk twits , so far ,’follow’ me on X. It all started when I allowed for messaging. I had a conversation with the first. I suspect it was using Grok for the message replays. Of course it reached the point where it wanted me to invest in some ‘fool proof’ stuff. That is when I turned off the message permissions.

Hannity has one as a sponsor to his radio show. I forget the actual name but it claims there is no monthly charge. They have advertised on other talk shows as well.

- You owe the IRS for back taxes. Pay now, or you will be arrested.

I got a mail notice the other day from the IRS that I miscalculated my taxes by a couple hundred bucks. If it takes a couple of hours to connect to a live body at the IRS, the notice is probably legit. If it take another couple of hours or so to resolve a simple dispute, that is further justification the notice is legit..

One of these scams involves “ PUBLISHER’S CLEARING HOUSE”

MY NEIGHBORS FELL FOR IT...

THOUGHT THEY HAD A REAL CHECK FOR $750,000.

THEY DID HAVE SENSE ENOUGH TO TAKE IT TO THE BANK & THEY LEARNED IT WAS ALL FAKE:

THE INSTRUCTIONS: “CASH THE CHECK AT YOUR ATM & SEND US THE TAXES OWED. BY WITHDRAWING $$$”

I HAVE NEVER SEEN ANY METHOD THAT YOU CAN USE TO “CASH A CHECK AT THE ATM”.

ELDERLY-—MAYBE A BIT older than I—I am 85.

I READ THEM THE RIOT ACT. TOLD THEM TO COME DIRECTLY TO ME IF THEY GET ANYTHING LIKE THIS EVER AGAIN.

The only other crap calls I get asking for $$$== “GRANDMA—I AM IN JAIL”

SINCE I NEVER HAD ANY KIDS-—I SWEAR AT THEM IN VERY HIGH DECIBELS and hand up.

THE CALLS TO “SELL MY HOUSE” have driven me to tell them “8 MILLION DOLLARS-—ALL CASH—180 day escrow to find a new place”
