What say you Freepers, any personal experiences with Lasik?

I'm suspicious of the claims of suicidal tendencies due to bad surgery.
I was going to get it done but figured I’d be the one where there’s a massive power surge or outage in the middle of it so I’ve been wearing contacts and readers for 40+ years.
I had Lasik way back in 2000 ... I’m still here. IDK what all this is about. The worst thing I got out of it was a floater. Mom had it done and loved it so much she and dad paid for me and my siblings to get it. No lasting pain in any of us. And definitely no suicidal thoughts.
I had lasik. It was awesome. I went from 20/200 in one eye and 20/300 in the other to 20/40 in both. I did have one eye regress after a year and I had to have a follow up procedure called Lasek wherein they scrape the lens of the eye. My eye watered like crazy for weeks afterward. It looked like looking through a very thick sheet of plastic for the first few months after that. After about 6 months it was like looking through a sheet of saran wrap. After about a year it was good.
I eventually had to have glass again when I hit my early 40s but fixing my eyes was some of the best money I ever spent. I can’t begin to tell you how joyous it was throwing my old glasses in the garbage because I no longer needed them after having be stuck with glasses until my early 30s when I finally had the money to get lasik. I hated them so much I only wore them to read. I just wish I could have had lasik 15 years earlier.
My personal experience since 2005 has been good - but I had an expensive surgeon. I think some of the problems may come from using the cheap “Discount - $1,000 per eye!” clinics that sprang up like mushrooms in the 2000’s.
I've been considering it also. Been wearing glasses/contacts since I was 6 years old. After over 40 years of that, it would be really nice to not have to deal with it any more.
I had it done 22 years ago.
No issues.
Had it done in 2003. Best investment ever. Vision went to 20/15. Increased accuracy with all types of weapons.
Then my arms got too short. (Loss of near vision)
This happens to almost everyone in their mid to late 40’s.
Then you start buying reading glasses, ever increasing strength, until you get to max power. Then you get progressive eyeglasses. Uggggh.
But for 10-15 years, best vision of my life.
I had lasik in 2001, and it was one of the best things I have ever done for myself. Enabled me to surf, play golf, drive, etc. free of glasses. It’s not perfect, but what is?
I would do it again in a heartbeat.
Had LASIK on both eyes over 20 years ago. I’m going to get my first pair of prescription glasses since the surgery in a few days. It has been very successful and helpful for me. I’ve had zero problems.
I had LASEK, similar to LASIK, in March of 2003 right before I went into the police academy. Best thing I ever did. Has great vision for over 20 years. Only needed to get glasses about 18 months ago. Very happy with my decision. On clear days I can still see for miles perfectly.
That being said, I personally wouldn’t go anywhere near it.
My eyes are way too valuable a commodity to put to any unnecessary risk.
“Biggest scam”? Hardly. Obamacare, 2020 Elections, Covid jabs, social distancing, masks, shutting down “non essential” businesses…
As others noted, as the equipment price has dropped I think there are many more half-trained practitioners out there and many, many more getting the procedures done. And probably some of them would be denied treatment by better trained practitioners because they have contraindications.
Yes. Got it at 54 years of age. 7 years ago. Love it. No issues whatsoever.
I had LASIK over twenty years ago, when it first came out. I had severe astigmatism all my life. Bottle bottom glasses. After surgery I was 20/20–it was immediate and like a miracle. NO problems.
I. Know several who have had it with no issues.
My son in law had it a few years ago. Went through agonizing pain for 2 full days but is now doing well.
I had it. Many people I know have had it. I went to 20/05 vision. Excellent results. Wife did too. After 20 years we both regressed due to astigmatism to 20/20, 20/25. Still, excellent results. I’ve known hundreds of people who did the same. No issues 20+ years later.
LASIK does have risks due to bad doctors, but to say some people have had bad results so everyone should stay away is childishly stupid.
