I also have three; they each have their own personality, but are blessed with a certain floor level skillset. My oldest has an enhanced ability for scent. Her sire and dam were both drug dogs. She weighs 52 pounds and the two boys weigh 75. But, she is the Alpha of the pack after me. My #2 is my most athletic - he can run 32 mph and jump fences 10 feet high and climb walls straight up for 25 feet. He climbs trees too. My #3 is my more affectionate lad. He always needs to have contact with me when I am sitting or walking. All have their assigned seats in the vehicle, and have their sleeping location on the bedroom floor at night. The oldest always sleeps between the bed and the door as she is protecting me and won’t allow anything to sneak up on me. Mals are known for three F words - they are faithful, fearless, and ferocious (on command). They always are two steps ahead of me with their knack for anticipating what I will do. They are all on voice command and hand signals. One speaks English, one German, and one French. All dogs are much more trainable than humans give them credit for being, but this breed has an uncanny knack for rapid learning and solving puzzles. I reflect and just don’t know what I did before I got my first.

Are they good for families with little kids and toddlers?

I absolutely loved the movie “Dog”!

I can imagine there was a spike in the sale of Belgian Malinois after that.

Amazing dogs.

These are power dogs that like to work. Very high energy level. They would be good with older kids who can run around the large yard and play with them, but I would not recommend them for toddlers, small children, confined spaces, urban dwelling.

If you don’t give them space and something to do, no one will be happy.

They likely won’t hurt kids/toddlers on purpose, but they’ll knock them down repeatedly by accident. Once they’re 10 or so, they would be ok.

I’ve had a bunch of dogs, and last year lost my best one, Malinois at 13.

Have a Dutch Shepherd now, pretty much the same type.

We have three Belgian Malinois also. Two are certified working dogs (narcotics detection and SAR tracking), the third is a puppy and in training. Best dogs ever!

We had an Australian Shepherd/Husky/and other stuff (rescue dog). He was amazing. He would sit on our lawn and watch the kids as they played in our cul-de-sac. Sometimes with my wife sitting with him, or her playing with the kids. I would get home from work, get out of the truck and he would come say hi and then go lay down in the shade knowing that his guard duty was over for the day.

He was 12 when he got cancer in his leg. I debated whether it was worth it to amputate his leg at his age. The vet said he was really strong and young at heart. “Yeah - but he might only last another year.”

“That’s true. But that’s 7 years in dog years.”

“Let’s do it!” (That was an AMAZING perspective to hear!)

A year later he’s running up and down the sledding hill with the kids. Some lady said “Boy - your puppy sure has a lot of energy!”

“He’s 13!”

On his next trip racing up the hill she exclaims “He only has three legs!!”

He was 14 1/2 and in misery when we had to put him down. I wish I had the heart to do it myself so he didn’t have to go through that last night before the vet came to our house and did it.
