creature might have entered the building through an air vent, which provides an accessible point for animals to crawl through. That's why it is imperative that you have chimney caps installed on your chimney. Because they WILL get inside.
A few years ago I saw two little coons sticking their heads out of my neighbor's chimney that didn't have a cap.

It really is imperative that you have a chimney cap. Your insurance will not pay for damage done by animals in your house.

While raccoons don’t have a true thumb, they do have an “opposable digit”. If you ever watched these little guys in action you’d see some amazing dexterity by their front paws.
