I’ll check out ‘Ringworld.’

Larry Niven is one of the greats.

His son, Brian Herbert, and a co-author wrote a series of prequels and two sequels. Some of them used Frank Herbert’s original notes and outlines and I found them to be excellent reads. They go into detail on some of the details that Dune and the sequels were silent, on like why didn’t they just build computers to pilot the ships (The Machine Revolution and The Butlerian Jihad), and why was Baron Harkonnen unable to walk and needs a levitator (he raped a Bene Gesserit who used her ability to transmute her body fluids to infect him with an uncurable disease). If you liked Dune you’ll probably like them as well.

First off - I have not read Dune, though I have read a couple of Herberts books - Helltrom's Hive and another one I cannot remember right now. I realize it is science fiction, with an emphasis on fiction. However, all fiction must be based on real things. When I watch the trailers for Dune, my first thought is, if it is a planet of sand, where do the inhabitants get the materials to build their civilization? Their clothes? What do they eat? Is all this explained in the book?

Spice is used for many things besides being a geriatric drug and a space flight enabler.

Plus, there is a active interplanetary trade association called CHOAM, that regulates trade across the empire. And of course there are smugglers and pirates that will evade the rules.

The Fremen have their own water supplies and even their own agriculture and factories hidden well underground.........

Other than gardening and growing food & flowers, there’s nothing I’d rather be doing than reading.

Thanks, Mom! :)

I’m in High School. She hands me a copy of ‘Jaws’ while saying, “You’ve GOT to read this!”

Life-long nightmares of shark-infested waters ensue, LOL!

The original Star Trek used many devices we now have today. Computer disk, Bluetooth, smart medical beds, cell phones, hypo needles, etc.

Yes there are some things in older science fiction that predicted present day tech with some accuracy. But that’s kind of like cherry picking. Most things are nothing close to what we have now.

True. But you have to give Verne the credit for coming up with the words nuclear and nuclear power.

I was one of the last in my family to get a Smartphone.

I LOVED my Flip-Phone ‘Communicator.’ ;)
