The century-old retailer is set to shutter additional locations by May 25, marking another blow to traditional shopping malls. As JCPenney battles changing consumer habits, many wonder if this iconic chain can survive the challenges still on the horizon.

For over a hundred years, JCPenney has served as a go-to destination for clothes, home décor, and memorable holiday gifts. Founded in 1902, it became a staple in malls across the United States. However, the past decade saw shifting shopper preferences and tough economic conditions, and the pandemic further accelerated the move to online retail.

I am surprised they are still open. I think all the ones where I live are closed.

The JC Penney in Pocatello will close this month. Simon Properties purchased the mall. It is currently an enclosed mall and a popular place for people to walk year round. Heated in Winter, cooled in Summer. Simon believes that is a waste of money, so the mall will be demolished beginning May 31st. The JC Penney property opens into the mall. Only a few of the big retailers will survive the demolition. All of the locals are closing up shop permanently. A Target will be built. The "mall" will be transformed into a large outdoor strip mall. When you're finished shopping, make a beeline for your car. The food court won't be there anymore.

Best place to buy men’s dress shirts

It was my "go to" place for dress shirts until it was turned over to gay management. I haven't been back. I'm retiring in 30 days, so I won't have need of dress shirts for the office. The last time I purchased a suit was in 1991 for my interview with the current employer. I weighed 193 lbs. Today, I weigh 149 lbs. I would need to replace the suit and shirt. My tie collection is just fine. Nothing in my wardrobe even suitable for my own funeral.

Years ago I had a boss in a performance review tell me I needed to start shopping at Nordstrom. He was telling me I needed more biz like clothes (this was mid 1970s). I was still wearing my high school short skirts. At first I was offended, but knew he was right. So, I went to J C Penney (could not afford Nordstrom) and bought a new more appropriate wardrobe, which my then husband called frumpy. I ended up with better jobs, and got rid of the loser husband. Got a college education worth something too. Thank you Ben Wilkins...and JC Penney.

"Best place to buy men’s dress shirts
Good quality for a reasonable price"

I stopped buy JCP dress shirts years ago. While the neck size and sleeve length were as labeled, they made sleeves tighter to where it became hard to slide my arms in. The change could be seen in comparing the sleeves in old and new JCP shirts (of the same size and style).

I also stopped buying JCP penny loafers because the "leather" didn't last as long and the rubber heels were hollow and wore out sooner. But the lower shoe quality has been seen with other brands. Nowadays, good leather shoes are just expensive. Now I buy rubber-soled jogging shoes for everyday use.

I have never been in a JC Penney’s. I was in a Montgomery Ward once, bought a mattress.

Didn’t they hire a guy.......

Yeah, they hired a real doofus as CEO, Ron Johnson, at the end of 2011. He alienated a large part of the customer base, and the board fired him 16 months later. Not soon enough, because the damage was immense, and JCP has not recovered from it.

They went woke awhile back and it really hurt them big time. I d9nt think they ever fully recovered. Ford went woke too back in the day and suffered big time too, but that was back when folks actuslly gave a crap about not supporting companies that went woke, and did something about it. Target should have suffered the same fate, but not enough people boycotted them and their woke bathroom policies. Had they done so, we “might not” have had the lush for unisex bathrooms today. But we’ll never know.

The Penney’s near FR HQ is still plugging along...recently remodeled and getting better reviews.

My MIL had been a customer with JCP for decades but that tidily ended when their new CEO had holiday advertisement flyers sent on Mother’s Day and Father’s Day showing same sex parents with children and hiring Ellen Degenerate to be their spokesman.

For arguments sake let us assume their is a civilization a few light years away in another star system of our galaxy with a civilization an equal of ours today.

I think all the Penny's stores were closed there too.......
