“Flat out classical music that was written for the movie and does an extremely good job at conveying the mood of the scene.’

Gotta go with you here. Soundtrack, not just in the shootouts, but in the fort, the monastery hospital, and prison camp scenes. A great western and also a great anti-war movie.

The music for “Once Upon a Time in the West” and the music for “The Good The Bad And The Ugly” was all done by the one and only Ennio Morricone.

That’s the second mention I’ve seen on this thread of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. What a great movie. If nothing else, it was like a time machine back to 1960’s era Hollywood/LA — very realistic.

Tremendous acting in “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” especially by Leonardo DiCaprio. He stole the movie in a scene that he played alone in his on-set trailer wherein he berates himself for blowing a scene in the movie that was being made in the movie! It was brilliant. IMHO. Brad Pitt had the second best performance.

You’re right, they were both great with the edge going to DiCaprio who I had always considered kind of one dimensional but man he was great in that role. It made me have to rethink him as an actor.

If you like I will try to turn this into a list snd post it at the end of the thread to be printed off as a reference. I already have done that with tv recommendations threads.

Yes, the flawed masterpiece of “Birth of a Nation” proved movies could make money—lots of money far beyond nickelodeons. Another silent classic, the first porn movie “Free Ride” 1914. Its still around as so many copies were made. Two hitch hiking women are picked up, strip and “pay for their ride”.

There are some good movies in the last few years.

Some original ideas, great acting, plot development, music...

Yes, now that you mention it, I do remember that movie and it was very good.

Most is junk, but 10% of the movies produced still rise to the level where one says: “wow, that was really good.”

Sadly, like with music, there is little new, and most is formulary (mass produced). Many movies today are the same quality of a mediocre soap years ago. You can tell that with the advent of Amazon, Net flicks and others, for the most part it has become quantity over quality.

Yes, I was impressed with the acting. That scene in the bar where DiCaprio gets his lines right? I watched that scene over and over. And the alternate timeline at the end? Yep, like a time machine. Brad Pitt’s character was such an easy going dude, even when things went sideways.
In retrospect, everything changed after the summer of ‘69, six days before Woodstock.

“Conagher” — I just rented it on Amazon. Great movie! Thanks for the recommendation.

What a pairing — Sam Elliot and Kathryn Ross. The chemistry was pretty good. The death of Evie Teale’s husband was really tough and brutal. Evie and her children waiting for her husband and their father...waiting and waiting and waiting and they never knew what happened to him. That was rough.

I noticed in the credits that Angelique L’Amour had a small part as a stage coach passenger. She is the daughter of bestselling author Louis L’Amour who wrote the “Conagher” novel!
