WASHINGTON – As many Americans across the nation are rushing to obtain their REAL ID license, some are choosing to opt out by either using their valid passport as their preferred form of ID for travel or waiting until their current driver’s license expires and then renewing it.
The REAL ID requirement takes effect on May 7, when Americans must have a new form of identification in order to fly domestically.
The costs of obtaining the identification vary from state to state. Costs also vary according to whether travelers are obtaining a first-time REAL ID or looking to renew their existing license.
Other forms of identification that will be accepted in lieu of a REAL ID include a valid U.S. passport or passport card, DHS trusted traveler cards such as Global Entry, Department of Defense IDs, permanent resident cards, and border crossing cards.
With the deadline looming, Fox News Digital spoke this week with travelers and asked those who do not have or do not plan to get a REAL ID any time soon why they made that decision.
At the Ronald Reagan National Airport (DCA) in Washington, D.C., Lisa from Oregon said that it was a “financial decision” at this time.
Lisa (no last name shared) said she had not yet gotten a REAL ID to date “because it was an extra cost, and I knew that I would rather put that money toward the passport.”
She said that at a later date, she may decide to get a REAL ID.
“When I’m traveling later, I’ll have to bring my passport, and I may not want to do that for stateside travel,” she said.

Eventually we will see Soviet-style Internal Passports.
I can’t get a real ID because I was adopted when I was 8 months old, and my parents changed my name. That required a NEW birth certificate which the state of Ohio can’t find. I have my original birth certificate, both of my marriage licenses and my divorce papers, but without that other birth certificate, I am grounded.
I will be eighty years old in a few weeks. I don’t know how much longer my husband and I can safely drive to Florida to visit a daughter and grandkids. I wish Congress would consider the unintended consequences of their legislation.
Didn’t know you can get a Real ID at AAA. I’ll check in to it.
WE MUST HAVE REAL ID’S.
MEANWHILE, BIDEN FLEW THOUSANDS INTO THIS COUNTRY WHO DO NOT BELONG HERE
For a few dollars more, you can get a passport card when you get a passport. More convenient for domestic travel, and avoids the need to go through the hassles for a new driver’s license.
Somebody mentioned that different states might be interpreting the rules differently. Va state DMV wants proof of the marriage from an official government, not church, license in order that a married wife can prove that she was under a maiden name before she assumed a married last name. Birth Certificates and a social security card apparently aren’t enough for the state of Virginia. Virginia isn’t even accepting the old driver’s licenses as prove.
If you are a woman whose Birth certificate lists a maiden name but your social security card has a different last Married name then most states are demanding a copy of proof that a marriage had occurred under government not church certificate. Virginia has been rejecting many married women for not having government marriage licenses and won’t accept Church documents. They argument is that the discontinuity of names between the birth certificate and the married name must be explained by official documents. (A person who changed their legal name to another is in the same boat and must show official proof as well.)
Now i don’t know why some states make it a little easier for married women in terms of their rules for Real ID but many states do not!
You don’t think they won’t be handing out Real ID’s to these illegals who will lack the proper documents...heh heh? They’ll issue them anyway knowing that there isn’t enough manpower to check everyone’s documentation. They will signal all docs verified(whether they have them or not) and then they’ll get a Real ID.
All of you should get the passport card. Use the passport card at the airport. That way, you won’t misplace your driver’s license.
Extra credit: Get Global Entry.
In Massachusetts, online driver’s license renewal comes with required voter registration. You have to tell the online renewal you live “out of state” to avoid voter registration.
Does Amtrak require a Real ID?
IIRC there needs to be official documents paper trail linking birth certificate name to current name.
I’ll never be flying again, so have no need for a REAL ID.
Did you ever try and get a passport?
Do adoption papers show that you were born in the US?
I’ll stick with the unreal, fake ID thank you.
Thanks both for the info that a W-2 can be used!
I have a passport card I can use if need be but I’d rather just use a driver’s license.
Yeah, I really haven’t wanted to go to SS office.
Yeah. Hassle.
Thanks.
Thanks. W-2 info is great.
