Costco rival removing all self-checkout machines... and replacing them with something even worse

Sam's Club stores is axing all self-checkouts from its 600 stores — in favor of controversial new technology.

The Walmart-owned warehouse chain, often seen as Costco's biggest rival, is rolling out AI-powered 'Scan & Go' tech that lets shoppers skip the line and walk straight out the door once they're done shopping.

The move is controversial because it uses a network of cameras and sensors to track shoppers and their carts.

In addition, the checkout-free experience requires all customers to use a smartphone and download the store’s app.

This could pose a challenge to older shoppers who may struggle with technology.

The shake-up is aimed at reducing checkout wait times as it eliminates the need for an employee to check receipts at the exit.

Customers will scan the product barcodes as they go around the store, put the item in their cart and then pay for the items in the app when they are done.

Rather than go to a register, they exit through an airport-style scanner with AI cameras that analyze carts to make sure all items in there have been scanned and paid for.

No, not this kid. This is a slicker way to have individual purchases associated with the buyer. If one uses cash at a normal checkout station, there is no way to digitally know what anyone buys.

Cell phones are one big surveillance trap. They allow monitoring of ones travels, communications and any pictures taken. With this crap individual purchases can be monitored in real time.

“I guess the cost of RFID chips have fallen low enough to do this.”

Does not use RFID.

Ha. More spending on plastic zip ties and hypodermic syringes of sleep inducing narcotics to suspects.

Today I bought an overpriced outwear jacket on sale at Macy’s and the alarm went off as I left. The stain device had been pried off but they had another type of smaller tattle device in one pocket. I was innocent and had my receipt so they apologized.

Nope. Not until there are no other alternatives. We go into our banks and S&L, use one credit card and no dedicated apps on our very simple phones, most preinstalled apps deleted long ago.

Even if you pay cash they know. You have to scan your membership card to start a transaction.

I don’t know where you eat.

My job has me on the road usually 2-5 days a week. Lots and lots of restaurants. The example I gave was the only one I’ve ever come across.

Well, A Sam’s Club is the only such store within a day’s easy driving distance from me. I used to go there 2-3 times a year and usually spend a thousand or two dollars there each trip, and pay cash. Never again.

Yet one step closer to “Mark of the Beast”, whether you are religious or not, it is pretty obvious.

Well, when it’s fully implemented, that will be the end of my shopping there.

I almost never carry a cell phone, so apps are worthless to me. I have a few grocery discount cards, but none under my own name.

I can afford what I need without the app discounts. I don’t care if others want to use them; I simply choose not to. If a store or restaurant requires their customers to use their apps, I go somewhere else. There are plenty of somewhere elses, at least so far.

>I don’t use the Kroger digital coupons for example.

Kroger’s app stinks. Whoever designed the UX (user experience) should be taken out back and beaten bloody with organic carrots.

I use the app. It is great! Easy, no lines. On the way out the door, they don’t even need to check a receipt. Pay with the Sam’s card, for an additional 5% savings.

It’s wonderful!! Sam’s Club was packed today, and I only needed a few things.

I was in and out in a few minutes.

I refuse to get a smart phone.

I’ll keep using my little flip (dumb) phone.

I’ve been using this scan and go technology. I like it, but I guess those who are not up to speed on 21st century technology probably don’t.
