Iran offered US a nuclear agreement with same enrichment cap as 2015 deal — report
Times of Israel ^ | 4/18/2025 | Staff

Tehran proposed during talks on Saturday a three-stage deal that would cap its uranium enrichment to the same levels agreed to in the abandoned 2015 deal in exchange for the lifting of US sanctions, dissident Iranian news outlet Iran International reported Thursday, citing three diplomatic sources.

According to Iran International, Iran’s proposal would temporarily decrease uranium enrichment to 3.67%, the level set in the 2015 deal that Trump withdrew from during his first term. In exchange, the US would permit Iran to access frozen financial assets and export its oil in the first phase, the outlet said. Uranium is considered weapons-grade when it is enriched to 90%.

In the second phase, the US would lift more sanctions and prevent the snapback of UN sanctions, according to Iran International. In exchange, Iran would reportedly allow the United Nations’ International Atomic Energy Agency to resume its inspections of nuclear sites, while also carrying out the “additional protocol,” allowing the nuclear watchdog to perform surprise inspections of undeclared sites.

In the final stage, the report said, Iran would transfer stockpiles of highly enriched uranium to a third country, the US Congress would ratify the nuclear deal, and the Trump administration would lift primary and secondary sanctions.

Trump shouldn't agree to any deal unless the mosques in Iran play 5 times daily Rock the Casbah by The Clash.

Iran offered US a nuclear agreement with same enrichment cap as 2015 deal —
which was the Obama deal Trump tore up during his first term as president

Now that they have enough to create a few bombs, they are willing to reduce production. I think that train has left the station.

As the article admits, until the enrichment is >90% it can’t go boom.
So, why are we wasting any effort or negotiating capital on anything below that? What are we giving up that we could have if we quit talking about anything below 90%? This is asinine.

Apparently, there is money involved in wasting such effort. So, who is profiting?

The ONLY military threats to Iran, are from the one nation whose very existence the Mullahs threaten to eliminate - Israel. Minus the ability to make good on that threat, the Mullahs have no security needs for which to pursue nuclear weapons. An Iran that was minus the Mullahs would be neither a threat to, nor threatened by, anyone.

Perhaps Trump is buying to time to let things play out behind the scenes. The Rial is worthless. It’s over 1,000,000 rial to a $. The IRG isn’t getting paid. Iran has lost Syria, Hamas, Hezbollah, and soon the Houthis. The mullahs are on borrowed time.

Now just who would be the third party ??

The article is incorrect. It is also from something called a dissident news source, which means, as proven by the wrong data, to be worthless.

1) Reactor grade enrichment is generally accepted to be 5%, not 3.67%. There is no reason to accept lower. No reason to propose lower. 5% is not going to be made into weapons.

2) You do not need 90% enrichment for weapons grade. You can get nice booms at 70%. You can get lesser quality booms even lower.

3) The writers know nothing.

FYI, Uranium out of the ground is a combination of U235 (0.7%) and U238 (99.3%). There is a tiny weight difference of the two isotopes so you spin the material in some special fluid and spin it and spin it and the heavier stuff migrates to the outside of the curve. Scrape it out and continue spinning. After a while you have elevated 0.7% to 5%.

Pretty much all nuclear powers don’t think in these terms anymore. Fuel rods from reactors are processed to harvest Plutonium. Pu239. It has its own set of obstacles, but the can be overcome and it takes much less time than years of spinning. 99% of the world’s nuclear weapons are Pu239 based.

Regardless of all this, Iran could promise no more uranium enrichment at all, they could promise to have inspectors come in and inspect. They could dismantle their reactor and stop building others. And the US would not accept it. The US wants to dictate their foreign policy. They have the 2nd largest reserves of natgas in the world and the demand for it is astronomical. They can fund their foreign policy with it.

The US doesn’t really care about their nuclear program. They likely already have a few fission bombs. That’s not what this is all about. The US wants to dictate their government’s foreign policy.

This plus supposedly blocking an Israeli attack on Iran's nuke facilities sure looks like Trump is backing down.

His feckless weakness over Ukraine is apparently being joined with caving in to the mullahs as well.

On foreign policy at least, we're getting Donald "J is for Jimmy Carter" Trump.

The Iranian mullahs and their proxies have been killing Americans since 1979.

Right now Israel has knocked Iran back 40 years in terms of its position in the ME. Looks like Trump is willing to throw that all away and let the mullahs keep killing Americans.

Naw.

Iran needs to do better than the 2015 deal. They have to go be guarantees of non-terrorism support and non-piracy. So, no Hezbolla, Al Quesda, Hamas, Houthis, or any other Islamic terrorist organization. Should they violate it, they accept unrestricted warfare and its consequences to Iran and its people.

The will say ‘no’ and then Trump will have said he tried negotiations and they failed. Takes longer, ends same way.

An agreement structured around an “enrichment cap” would be a relic of the misguided Obama-era mindset. If America embraces such a naïve proposition, we won’t just be compromising our strength — we’ll be signaling to the world that we’ve chosen the path of “peace through weakness”.

I do not believe it is exactly the same, because I do not think that they were allowing inspections. However, Trump should change from the U.N. doing the inspections, to the U.S. conducting the inspections. I bet Iran will not accept that condition, because they know that the U.N. will allow them to cheat, because they too hate Israel, & the U.S. On additional condition should be access to whatever area they wish to examine, which Israel can provide where that underground enrichment site is per their intelligence..
