Is Ted Cruz running again? Texas carves out unique lane in Trump’s GOP

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), who finished in second place to President Trump in the 2016 Republican presidential primary, has distinguished himself from MAGA World by declaring his skepticism of long-term tariffs, remaining a hawk on Russia and coming out against proposals to tax the rich.

By calling out tariffs as “taxes on American consumers” and sticking to his view that Russia poses a serious threat to U.S. interests, Cruz may be laying the groundwork to run against Trump’s heir apparent, Vice President Vance, in a 2028 Republican primary.

“I think he’s carving out a position for himself as the defender of traditional conservatism,” Vin Weber, a Republican strategist, said of Cruz, who is 54.

“He’s a viable contender for president because he’s a brilliant conservative and he represents the largest Republican state,” he said.

A big potential obstacle for anyone seeking the GOP presidential nomination in 2028 is Vance, who is 40.

Vance is Trump’s natural heir apparent, and has fully embraced the MAGA agenda, including the use of high tariffs to bring manufacturing back to the United States and a view that the nation doesn’t have the defense industrial capacity to continue providing billions of dollars in military support to Ukraine.

Weber said Vance is an “obvious problem” to any White House ambitions from Cruz or other Republicans.

Cruz has no chance against Vance if things stay the same. Cruz needs to stay in senate or on SCOTUS. Rand is a no go all day long, he is not conservative.

I’d love to see him on the Supreme Court.

Yes, yes and yes... Also nice jibe. I’d argue Rand is the most conservative senator around.

I never, ever, trusted him...but at least now we know that he has an abject HATRED towards Trump voters.

I would have agreed with that eight years ago. He is too old and too much of a politician at this point. Barrett was Trumps biggest mistake with regard to judges. They will not always rule the way we want, but you expect reasoned dissent not the BS out of Barrett and Roberts.

The Hill is doing whatever they can to create more division in the GOP.

I’ve voted for Cruz every time he was on my ballot, but I’m with Vance at this time.

Cruz could best serve the US and conservatism as a justice on the Supreme Court. I’d never need to guess how he’s going to vote on issues of importance - unlike Roberts, Amy Coney Barrett and even Brett Kavanaugh. President - nah, I’d rather see Vance or DeSantis as the nominee in 2028.

“Ted has zero chance to win.”

I agree, and I like Ted as a Senator.

After Ted’s disastrous first run I don’t see him ever being President. Remember the shaming letters? Remember him letting Glenn Beck swear him in on George Washington’s compass? Remember his own kid not letting him touch her? Remember his shameful performance at the convention where he got booed off the stage?

Remember when he voted for TPP?

I don’t ever want Ted Cruz in the Whitehouse because he has character issues and he’s wrong on Russia, tariffs and global trade in general.

Agree. He has been pretty good overall, except tariffs. He and Le have stood against McConnell.
