We have hawthorne growing wild, sprouts up everywhere. Bad thorns. Maybe we can eat it now?

Hawthorn makes a lovely hedgerow.

You can harvest, flower, leaf and fruit.

The flower makes a tasty syrup that when added to sparkling water is quite a nice drink, the fruit can be made into jelly or relish, it is better to cook this fruit as raw may upset your stomach. The young leaves can be eaten as they are in the spring. They can be harvested later in the year but they are not nearly as nice.

One note, do not eat the seeds and be sure to get all the stems off the fruit before processing.

And as a hedge..... it looks pretty and no one is going to push their way easily through it.

“I’m surprised that we don’t have any Hawthorns on our property. Gonna ask Mr. Wonderful about adding some.”

Don’t do it. The thorns are positively wicked, and can puncture a big, expensive tractor tire.

I’ve been taking hawthorn pills for 3+ years. It’s supposedly good for the heart. I don’t recall if it’s the leaves or flowers.

There’s no right or wrong when it comes to taste. Gag reflex is personal.

I just answered a message from another FReeper - Beau says NO, so it’s a no-go for us, too.

However, the plus side of the Hawthorn is that the thorny trunk/limbs keeps predators away from songbird nests, so I think it’s probably best to just let Mother Nature take it from here. ;)
