Aslan is not “generally portrayed as male.” Aslan is given male pronouns in the book, a male personality, a male role, and a mane which is much beloved by the characters in the book. Making Aslan female means making him a queen instead of a king, and more strangely, making him a lioness instead of a lion.
Whether or not a lioness does much of the hunting for the tribe, there’s no mistaking that the lion defines the tribe and does so by combat. To portray him as a lioness is to deprive him of his signature feature; it would be as nonsensical as making McDonald’s Mayor McCheese into a personified baloney sandwich and as confusing as naming him the Burger’s King.
