‘Hormonal’ hawk terrorizes bald men for weeks in English village — before it’s finally captured

The bloodthirsty bird wreaked havoc on roughly 50 people in Flamstead, Hertfordshire, just north of London, by swooping down and clawing their heads from behind — hospitalizing one resident and leaving others drenched in blood, according to BBC News.

In one hair-raising attack, the male Harris’s hawk left Jim Hewitt, 75, with a gaping dome gash as he walked to the store to get milk Wednesday, the outlet reported.

The bird-brained brute had reportedly attacked dozens of other men from behind since early March, including Steve Harris, 40, who said he was forced to wear a bike helmet on his daily jog.

Mail deliveries were also delayed to the village as postal workers’ feathers were ruffled by the sky-high savage.

Handyman and gardener Paul Boyes was attacked twice by the hawk.

“It really did hurt when it hit you,” he told The Guardian. “It comes up behind you, and its talons got me in the back of the head, and its other ones came round the front and got me on my forehead.”

The bird likely went ballistic due to a hormonal flare-up during breeding season — though it’s unclear why he harbored hatred for the follicly challenged, an expert said.

“All this dive-bombing, I think it’s hormonal, courtship, because it’s only started happening in the last couple of weeks: breeding season,” falconer Alan Greenhalgh told the UK Independent.

I've been thumped on the head by mockingbirds and blue jays when I've ventured too close to their nests.

The first time this happened to me I was about 4 or 5 years old. I wasn't scared, I just thought "you nasty S.O.B!"

This is why I always wear a helmet whenever I’m in Flamstead, Hertfordshire.

Even though I’m not bald.

Next time the bird acts that way, call the Humane Society, or their British equivalent. Ask them to bring a bag of those special ‘bullet shaped’ bird seeds with them.
The ‘seeds’ are dispersed one at a time, using a long metal pipe.

We have great horned owls that nest in a big mesquite tree at the base of our property. Every now and then, they will buzz us when we are outside. I tell people that they just want to harass the local humans from time to time.

It was something like someone swatting you on the head with a rolled up newspaper. It definitely
gets your attenton. I'm sure the hawks with their talons would be a bit more frightening!

Here is an interesting article: Why Is That Bird Dive-Bombing You?

I’ve had skin broken by an owl attack...and one where the owl flew off with my hat but dropped it pretty quickly.

I’ve been attacked by pigeons. It’s a common hazard in vacant buildings. They’re just defending their interests...and it’s legal to kill them.

I’ve never heard of any type of hawk attacking people. Mockingbirds and Grackles do it for sure.

Well, at least the hawk didn’t drop any turtles on their heads.

I’ve had several big hawks kill themselves by dive bombing my windshield while driving interstate highways. It kills them as they hit really hard.

A few months ago, one bounced off my windshield and knocked the driver’s side mirror on my Ford Transit 150 entirely off the vehicle on I-81 in New York. I’m on my third windshield.

Great horned owls are the scariest as you never expect them. I encountered one in my small chicken house at night. Luckily, I flipped on the light and it blinded it long enough for me to kill it. Actually, my German Shepherd killed it after I knocked it down with a shovel as it flew at me. That sure gets the heart beating.
