The MONTHLY Gardening Thread is a gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to/removed from our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a MONTH Ping List, but we DO post to the thread all throughout the month. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time.
I meant to mention: That sounds & looks good!!
One more day to go, here: It’s raining hard now: Nothing too severe, but noisy (thunder). We had lots of tornado warnings yesterday, but damage in the area was a lot less than a couple days ago. Hail beat down some early crops, here and there, per a local farm show, and also some farmers may have to replant due to fields being flooded.

Today is the first day I feel relatively 'back to normal...' whatever THAT is, LOL! I'm sleeping fine and am off the cold meds and additional vitamins/minerals, etc. Yay! After brunch I am going to walk around the Manse and see what's in bud, and I must get my Dahlia from seed started as well as pot up some el-cheap-o tubers I bought from Walmart. I'll report back, later. Have a Good Day, Everyone!
Great to hear you’re feeling cheeper/chipper and that’s a great picture!
Hope the spring air revs you up...be well
Wow! That is a really pretty lettuce. Reminds me of Black Seeded Simpson.
Each ‘head’ should be in a 6-8” pot. It doesn’t have to be really deep - a recycled nursery pot would be just fine. Lettuce has a shallow root system, so depth usually isn’t a problem. Make sure there’s good drainage.
Lettuces in pots are ‘heavier feeders’ so get in the habit of using a diluted 10-10-10 fertilizer (basic Miracle Grow, or go organic) with every watering.
I have some pictures to post later of my experiment with re-growing store-bought Romaine lettuce ‘stumps.’ It worked pretty well!
Raining and miserable cold where I am today- damp- bone chilling (I think I’m coming down with something myself) good day to crawl back in bed for needed sleep- glad you are feeling better. No fun being sick. Hope your walk rejuvenates you after being sick.
Glad to hear it.....but be cautious.....the flu sometimes returns w/ a vengeance.
Glad you’re feeling mostly better. Things are wet and soggy around here with more rain coming. I think Monday will be our first dry day in half a week. Fingers crossed. I’d like to get the mulch down asap.
Summer Vegetable Grazing Platters
Vibrant, colorful vegetable harvest perfect for grazing as you grill the main course.
Ing Broccoli Cherry Tomatoes Black Olives Sliced Mushrooms Leeks Carrots Purple Cabbage Red/Purple Beets Yellow Beets Spring Lettuce
Layer a bed of spring lettuce mix on grazing tray, then vegetables in no particular order.
Add spiralized or curled vegetables to the platter. Serve with your favorite dipping sauce.
Creamy ranch and Caesar dressing as well as vinaigrettes go well with this.
Homemade blue cheese dressing infused with citrus is absolutely incredible.
Passing Bob’s message on to you, Diane. He just replied to the wrong one. Rainy here, too. Hate the thought of going out but just discovered a frozen dumpling that actually tastes good and balancing that against going out in the yuck to Stop&Shop. Not sure yet which is going to win. Love to both of you.

I’m over the moon at the moment at the success I’m having so far with seeds indoors. The plastic or Styrofoam egg cartons are proving to be very useful. My “cups runneth over” right now with green beans, radishes, tomatoes (3 varieties), multicolored bell peppers, cucumbers, and even parsnips. The only thing that didn’t germinate was the turnips, but I expected that because the seeds were so old. Bought a new packet, and hope to see something germinate soon.
Can’t believe that just a year or two ago, I didn’t consider myself to be capable of growing anything at all. Heh. :-)
Good on your recovery! Keep up with the Fire Cider and you won’t go far wrong. :-)
Turnips are fool proof and don’t need any starting indoors.
Just scatter the seed on the ground, cover it up water it and walk away. You WILL get a crop.
Also, succession plant, IOW, about every 3 weeks plant more. That way you get an extended harvest as veggies past their maturity date tend to lose quality, seems they get woody and lose flavor.
All root crops should be started in the ground and none like transplanting. Except (as far as I know) onions.

Story of my life lol
I’m glad you’re feeling better!
The only thing prettier than a plate of fresh veggies is a Speckled Pup! 8HEART*
Thanks, Bob! Just being int he greenhouse is cheering me up greatly!
It’s just a head cold, but MAN did it zap my energy! I think I’ll have one more shot of Fire Cider - just to be safe!
