Windows 11 has been out for 3 and a half years. Windows 10 is reaching end of support on October 14, 2025. Despite the upgrade being free for most people, Microsoft is now sending out warnings constantly to upgrade or else. Windows 10 currently has nearly 60% of the Windows market, Windows 11 has a little more than 35% of the same market.

There is no doubt that the Linux users will show up in this thread berating anyone who is hesitant to switch to Linux. As always, I have no qualms about encouraging people to give the various flavors of Linux a try. Depending on your computer and what you use it for and how much time and money you have invested in Windows Apps and software there is a chance that you might want to go that direction.

This thread is more for people who want to keep using Windows after Windows 10 reaches its End of Life and the various solutions to that quandary. I have several computers that I use Windows on, some of them work well with Windows 11 and some don't. The funny thing is that one which was fully compliant with Microsoft's Windows 11 minimum requirements has problems with it. I purchased a Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC license for it which will receive security update until 2032.

Other computers which do not meet the minimums work fine with Windows 11 but you have to use workarounds which have been very easy to get that option and upgrade for free. Microsoft has been threatening to crack down on this for years. It seems that they might actually be starting to tighten things up.

Does Apple and Google allow you to use their OS without an account on their system?

I’m still using Windows 7

Microsoft finally got H&R Block to make their tax preparation software non-compatible with 7.

Full circle, back to pencil & paper for me.

They will soon require a blood test and short-arm inspection...

I have a printer that win11 does not support. I bought a ‘puter specifically to use win 10 for this printer, and MS is getting on my nerves constantly warning me about the loss of support in a few months.

I have my Windows 11 on a local account.

What Microsoft does to its users is sickening.

Looks like they want to have the ability to tie your social credit score to your operating system.

There is another workaround already and it’s actually easier than the old workaround. I’ll get the link.

Oh and there is a version of Linux, called wubuntu, which runs wine in background to run windows programs, and looks and feels a lot like, windows 11- might be worth a look for qthose who might be wanting to move on from windows, or perhaps even dual boot or triple boot even. Might even be able to run it from a usb

I have Fedora and Ubuntu Linux on two of my boxes. Windows 11 on two boxes. Windows 10 on two that don't meet hardware spec for Windows 11. My corporate laptop is Windows 11 with VMware Workstation Pro to run Linux and Windows VMs for customer targeted development. I'm not wedded to any particular platform. I use the platform that runs the tools/apps needed to do a particular task. My embedded systems were built/deployed on a stripped down Debian image. Disk space was at a premium. Most of the controllers were based on a PIC18F6680 reading switch closures, closing switches to activate motors, reading accelerometer and temperature data. The toolchain was exclusively Windows. The Linux box had a USB interface to a USB/CAN controllers to manage all of the devices. I started with QNX on the PC104 stack, but the licensing was too expensive for some of the necessary libraries, so it was necessary to rebuild the whole stack to use Debian Linux.

I wonder if installing Linux as the base O/S, then installing Windows 7 or 10 in a virtual box would be a good route to go.

Anyone?

I had to use Windows at work - gov’t contractor. When it broke I’d call the local IT guy to “come on down and fix this piece of crap - I’ll put some coffee on”. Good guy, easy to work with.

I use unix systems. The primary reason is reliability. Second reason is Windows just gets in my way. I’m an old command-line guy. Right now I’m on Firefox, have a couple of PDF files open on other screens, eight terminals open for different functions on other workspaces. My screen manager has 16 individual workspaces for use (essentially individual monitors without extra hardware), although I start getting lost at 5 screens or so. This is a standard FreeBSD installation - nothing fancy, but it suits me and doesn’t break. I can retitle the terminals; that helps *grin*.

Wife’s Linux Mint installation has four individual “workspaces”, essentially four individual monitors again without the extra hardware. It also does not break. She likes it - lotsa pretty graphics and you have to use the mouse, but that’s her speed. Terminals are also available if you want to get down and grunt, she just doesn’t use them. Doesn’t know how.

Windows severely restricts operations that are everyday simple stuff on unix boxes. I like my freedom on the unix boxes.

I started with toggle switches on an Altair 8800. That may have permanently pranged me.
I’m a dinosaur.

Ultimately, what they want is for everyone to use Chromebook style dumb terminals.

Much worse than in the USSR where every typewriter had to be registered with the government.
