The Yankees had an MIT physicist design a "torpedo" bat for them and they've now hit 15 homers in 3 games

Its illegal. MLB bats must follow specific specifications.
To: Red Badger
I think Al Kaline used a similar bat

Pitch inside and that bat is worthless.

What specification did they violate?
Sounds to me like the same geek advantage teams have been getting out of stats is here being applied to the equipment.
To: Red Badger
That should be illegal. It’s funny, but that’s should not be legal.
I can accept many things, like positioning the label of the bat in a prime position for maximum home runs, but the shape should not change.

The specs are fairly simple and the bats are within them............

And by the All-Star split, all the teams will be using them.

They took the bat design from a RPG.

1. Apparently they’re perfectly legal. MLB Rule 3.02 states that bats cannot be more than 2.61 inches in diameter and 42 inches in length, and these bats fit those specs. They’ve just distributed the thickness and weight differently along the length of the bat.
2. How much of an impact has the new bat style had? I think only a few of the players are using it, and most of the team’s offensive production in Milwaukee came from guys using normal bats.

I suspect that the physics are that this bat gets more leverage on the swing with more weight at the end of the bat. The bat should also break easier if the batter gets sawed off inside and up. Pitchers will adjust.

MLB Rule 3.02 states: “The bat shall be a smooth, round stick not more than 2.61 inches in diameter at the thickest part and not more than 42 inches in length. The bat shall be one piece of solid wood.”
Further, experimental bats cannot be used “until the manufacturer has secured approval from Major League Baseball of his design and methods of manufacture.”
To: frogjerk
Actually, he said “I thought this was hilarious, so I’m leaving it here” so I think he knows that’s not the real bat in question.

More than the bat shape is don’t throw meatball pitches right over the plate like the Brewer pitchers were doing and I’m saying this as a Red Sox fan.
