How Congress can kick illegal immigrants off Medicaid — and save us billions

With one stroke, Congress can deliver on three of President Trump’s biggest priorities: Discourage illegal immigration, reform a broken welfare program and save taxpayers billions.

It can all be done if Republicans roll back Medicaid for illegal aliens in their coming reconciliation bill.

As we show in our new report for the Foundation for Government Accountability, migrants have been allowed and even encouraged to abuse Medicaid — at enormous cost to Americans.

Medicaid was created for low-income citizens and lawful residents. But for more than a decade, and especially under Joe Biden, states have corrupted the program by letting it cover illegal immigrants, too.

This creates an obvious incentive to enter the US illegally, since foreigners know they can get health care on the taxpayers’ dime.

It also pushes vulnerable Americans, including the elderly and people with disabilities, to the back of the line for care. Often, they’re stuck behind able-bodied adults who shouldn’t be in this country at all.

Since 2020, according to information we’ve gleaned from 18 states, Medicaid expenditures on illegal aliens have grown by more than 75%.

The Biden administration spent $16 billion on emergency services for this population — services that must be covered under federal law. But federal and state taxpayers are spending billions more on non-emergency medical care.

For years, states have allowed illegal aliens to sign up for Medicaid, pending verification of their citizenship or lawful immigration status — a grace window grounded in an assumption of good faith.

It would seem this could this be done via reconciliation bill, it’s a budget issue so it should get through. Getting this through the senate as a stand alone is unlikely.
I don’t see why Feds couldn’t withhold at least some federal funding of blue state Medicaid in the interim although this would certainly be challenged by blue state AGs.

Instead of emergency services, we should provide emergency, permanent med-flights home.

Station ICE teams in ER’s. Do legal presence checks. And immediately detain and remove if not present legally. . .

The EMTALA only requires “emergency services” and “stabilizing care”. Medical services can refuse care for the sniffles and other normal medical procedures.

I’ve been in the emergency room, with a true emergency, surrounded by non English speaking families with sniffling toddlers looking for cough medicine.

If the Medicaid money is shut off, the hospitals will start turning these people away.

As a physician, I can tell you that specialists on call in the ER end up on the hook caring for these people, including surgery, because EMTALA also has mandates obligating medical staff on call to the ER to provide it. So, if you are a surgeon and anyone, insured or not, comes in with appendicitis, you will take him to the operating room and may not get paid unless you are a hospital employee. Don’t think of transferring to another hospital, because there are very heavy fines for “dumping” patients.

NYS cost shares Medicaid with counties.

Bet a lot of foreclosures are because people can’t afford confiscatory property taxes...

Meanwhile, on a dirty little secret that NYS was able to make a lot of money with before the SCOTUS scotched it, from last year...

After Foreclosing Homes, New York Towns Have to Pay Residents Back New York municipalities used to keep the surplus from foreclosed homes sold at auction. Then the Supreme Court ruled it unconstitutional.

One county, Oswego, was making over a million a year this way, by screwing residents out of their equity.

Illinois has been enrolling them for decades. I’d be in the Medicaid office while I was on dialysis and almost none of the Hispanics spoke English. I always got gawked at as the lone white girl.

It was very uncomfortable.
