Marijuana users at greater risk for heart attack, stroke

Weed users are much more likely to suffer a heart attack, stroke or other life-threatening heart condition than people who don't indulge, a new study says.

Adults under 50 are more than six times as likely to suffer a heart attack if they use marijuana, compared to non-users, researchers reported Tuesday in the journal JACC Advances.

They also have a dramatically higher risk of stroke, heart failure and heart-related death, researchers said.

"Asking about cannabis use should be part of clinicians' workup to understand patients' overall cardiovascular risk, similar to asking about smoking cigarettes," lead researcher Dr. Ibrahim Kamel, a clinical instructor at the Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine, said in a news release.

Weed is legal for recreational use in 24 states and for medical use in 39 states.

These results show that it is not inherently harmless, even as it is legalized across the U.S., researchers said.

I really don’t think it should be illegal, I just don’t want to have to interact with people who use the stuff.

It’s similar to the number of malignant alcoholics I need in my life, which is zero.

Sounds a lot like the stories I heard from ER workers, especially when the airlines had their big annual wing-dings at a nearby resort.

It always made my heart race. Friends would mellow out. I always wanted to work out stoned. Go run, play hoops, tennis, lift weights, etc. I liked driving buzzed. Hyper aware. Anything but sleep. Ultimately that’s what led me to quit.

I smoked it for about 5 years, but quit over 40 years ago. My brother, who’s 72, still smokes it every day. I’m glad I don’t. I wish he would quit.

My brother was a daily toker. Massive heart attack, at 44.

Carl Sagan, big time smoker. Dead at 62.

Admittedly, this is not a clinical study. But I've outlived a LOT of pot smokers.

Marijuana users at greater risk for heart attack, stroke

I remember from 1980's that Scandinavian researchers warned that older head-freaks smoking marijuana were at greater risk for heart attack, strokes.   I gave it up fifty years ago but I also remember the harshness on the throat and lungs and realized it was much worse than tobacco.   I gave up tobacco in 1985.   I feel that this recent publication with include the physiological impact on the whole body.

Did you know humans have cannabinoid receptors for ingesting marijuana that are part of our biology? So, making that illegal is a twisted attempt to undermine God’s creation. It’s embarrassing people have this weird view based on “refer madness” of the 1930s. All substances, if misused, have bad effects but we don’t make them illegal (like beer). Even Trump support medical weed, go figure...

I know many alcoholics who died long before the pot smokers. And I know pot smokers (like Willy Nelson) who are not only healthier than non-smokers, but are still jamming! People need to get over the “refer madness” already...
