Are These the Best Backyard Games of All Time?

Whether you’re barbecuing this weekend or just hanging out, what’s your go-to GAME you like to play in the backyard? We’ve got a ranking of the 10 BEST backyard games of all time based on fun, accessibility, and overall popularity. See if you agree . . .

1. Cornhole. It’s kind of THE go-to game now. Cincinnati gets credit for coming up with the modern version in the 1960s. But someone also patented a similar game with square holes way back in 1883.

2. Bocce. It’s good for multiple people, and you can play it anywhere. You don’t need a legit bocce court, or even a nice patch of grass. Just open space.

3. Wiffle ball. A guy in Connecticut made backyard baseball possible when he came up with it in 1953.

4. Two-hand-touch. Flag football is even better. Just stuff a rag in your belt.

5. Kickball. Fun fact: Brits call it “football rounders,” and Canadians call it “soccer baseball.” (You sure you want ’em as the 51st state, Mr. President?)

Might be more of a local thing, but here in St. Louis it's washers.

We play in a summer Bocce Ball league. Maybe 20 teams. Some are “social competitive” but others are “cutthroat competitive.” We always have a nice dinner and drinks afterward.

Well, it’s no game but before Phoenix hits the heat I’m doing spring cleaning on a daily basis.

Emptied out the linen closet of sheets and unnecessary blankets and things. Then in a two day job I did the garage, it’s attached to the house and not really two bad but moved things around, swept and washed floor.

Next on the agenda is the laundry room and we hit 93 I think theys said by the end of the week. Phoenix is brutal for months over the summer and games outside are pretty much non-existant.

It’s nice to be inside, ac going and house in tip-top shape.

I know, sounds kind of bummeresque but it is nice when it’s done :)

> bocce is the ultimate... <

I saw a video on YouTube maybe a year ago. An old man was playing bocce against a young buck. The old guy kept overshooting the pallino (the white target ball). It was kinda sad.

Then with his last ball, the old guy knocked the pallino smack in the middle of his previously-thrown balls.

Brilliant!

Washers beats cornhole - more challenging. I had a friend who actually built me a set of washer boards once upon a time, and as it turns out, he was from StL! It all makes sense now

The floor is lava - outdoor edition. Preferably not in the backyard but in an industrial area with lots of sharp objects. Good times.

Lawn darts (Jarts) that can go through skulls always kept me on my toes.

Unfortunately, as a kid, we had a propensity to throw them straight up, but not necessarily on purpose.

It was fun dodging those.
