Kids didn’t have convenience foods? What were the little kids cooking for themselves?

No boomer was cooking for themselves in an empty house after school
There was not a lot of eating between meals. We were all skinny. Seriously.
I was taught various ways (pre-microwave) to reheat left overs. In recent years I’ve rediscovered the pan fry reheat method, it’s actually really good and lets you basically reinvent the food, with various things to simmer in and spices it can actually be quite fun, and rescue the occasional bad meal.

Definitely not us Boomers! Moms were home and cooked real food. We had a family in our church whose mother worked as a nurse and there was no father around. We felt sorry for them because their mom was always working to support the family. Later we learned that dear ol’ dad was in prison for some sex thing with a minor. Other than that, mothers didn’t work outside the home. It was looked on as shameful.
Mom gave piano lessons — at home.
Mostly you just made yourself a half a sandwich, grabbed an apple or got a hard boiled egg out of the refrigerator. Maybe with a glass of milk. You were just getting a snack to tide you over, not having a five fork dinner.
Oh, and you washed dishes and wiped up any spills. Crumbs attract ants you know!
