How Do I Shut Down MS Edge?
March 9, 2025

Posted on 03/09/2025 5:20:00 PM PDT by Angelino97

Every time I boot up my Windows 11, I'm greeted by MS Edge. I can't seem to shut it down for good. I searched the internet, followed all the advice, but it doesn't work.

I tried the following tips I found on the internet:

1. Press Windows + R to launch the Run application. Type “regedit” in the dialogue box and press Enter.

2. Once in the registry editor, navigate to the following file path: Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NlaSvc\Parameters\Internet

3. Now, look at the right side of the screen where different keys are listed. Search through them until you find “EnableActiveProbing”. Double-click it to open its properties.

4. Set the currently set value to zero “0”. Press Ok to save changes and exit.

Okay, I did that. Edge still pops up.

I tried this:

Go to the following path: C:WindowsSystemApps. Find the folder named “Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe”.

Right-click the folder and select “Rename.” Change the folder’s name to something like “Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe_disabled.”

Renaming the folder tricks Windows into thinking Edge is gone. But remember, this won’t fully uninstall it, just disable it.

Okay, I did that. Edge still pops up.

I found that running CCleaner apparently shuts down Edge, because CC shuts down all web browsers when cleaning. But if I shut the laptop lid for a while, then open it ten or so minutes later, Edge greets me again.

Highly recommend Process Explorer. I leave a link on my task bar, and call it up to cancel those "processes" -- running programs -- which can be killed.

Several sources for it. Links at the bottom of the Wiki.

Just type “startup apps” in the search window on the Task Bar at bottom of screen. You’ll see a list of apps that you an turn off or on. Look for Microsoft Edge and turn the toggle switch to OFF. Then just close the window.

Oh that’s too bad. Like I said I wish I could help. I am avoiding having anything to do with Windows 11. Hope you find your solution.

I've been using Revo Uninstaller on iffy stuff because Windows removal apps always leave useless background folders and registry entries that accumulate, bogging down and slowing processing over time.

This Windows 10 that came with an Amazon refurbished laptop had Edge but Revo totally wiped it out with no harmful effects that I can see.

My box that my geek son built ...

Makes snapshots and after a few months the O/S uses up all my ssd drive space. Discover is the update tool that won’t let you turn it off.

Now got a keyring issue with brave browser. I don’t want it but everytime I restart the brave it pops up sort of out of my view and hangs the browser until I cancel it.

Kubuntu 22.04
KDE Plasma Version 5.24.7

Thinkgs like these that ME as the USER have no say in.

Linux OS tip: Study the various Linux OS installations. Use a Linux OS installation that is the most ubiquitous - the most common.

Because Windows has become far more trouble than it is worth. Actually I still use W7 on one box and W10 on the other. I am constantly having to push things around in settings etc to avoid getting w10 updated to W11. I have used 11 on someone else’s unit and it reminds me too much of VISTA. Everything in 11 is geared to make the things I use the computer for difficult to do and it takes up too damned much space on my drive. I do have Red Hat in a virtual machine on the 10 box and once you get over the ever shorter learning curve it is just easier to use.

I used Ubuntu for awhile but those constant updates finally got one that shut me down and I wiped it off and got Red Hat.

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/autoruns

This utility, which has the most comprehensive knowledge of auto-starting locations of any startup monitor, shows you what programs are configured to run during system bootup or login, and when you start various built-in Windows applications like Internet Explorer, Explorer and media players. These programs and drivers include ones in your startup folder, Run, RunOnce, and other Registry keys. Autoruns reports Explorer shell extensions, toolbars, browser helper objects, Winlogon notifications, auto-start services, and much more. Autoruns goes way beyond other autostart utilities.

I was going to suggest that as well, but thought it might be too snarky.

Startup Apps confirms that my Edge is disabled. I disabled it long ago.

And yet, it still pops up.

Edge is the Michael Myers of web browsers.

Why don’t you just use it? It is solid.

I Perhaps if all you open are a few tabs, and do not engage in customization. I have many browsers, most generally for their own purpose, and do not use any that I cannot obtain multiple tab rows on. Firefox-based Floorp (under Design) created by Japanese students, enables them by default.
