Does anyone use Sling TV Service?

Posted on 03/07/2025 7:07:59 PM PST by Jamestown1630

Does anyone here use Sling?

We 'cut the cord' many years ago, and have used Roku since then; but I would like to have one or two channels that are only available to cable subscribers. (We don't want or need cable.)

I'm just wondering if anyone here has been happy with Sling, and what one needs to make it work. I'm not interested in movies, just cable news, documentaries, history,

Thanks very much.

No, I don’t know about that; will have to look into it.

FOXNEWS is on Sling (Blue), as are all the other news channels

It depends what you want out of a live TV streaming provider.

Sling does not have network TV channels. So, one has to use an antenna to get the local channels (or bootleg IPTV). Even with it, there obviously one has no DVR for network shows.

Sling's DVR is very limited compared to live TV providers, which have unlimited DVR service. When I had it, one gets 50 hours.

We don’t really require DVR, and aren’t concerned about network news. But thanks for your response.

Fox News is on Sling Blue only.

No Newsmax on Sling.

I use YouTubeTV, which has both, and unlimited DVR and, IMO, the best method of organizing recorded shows. No live TV streaming provider has more sports channels than it.

It looks like either Sling Blue (News channels) or Sling Orange (Sports channels) for new subscribers is $23/month each.

I think it all depends on your zip code, good luck!

Thanks again. We’re not really interested in sports, just news; but we’ll look into it.

Again, I greatly appreciate the comments of all who responded.

Sling for about a month. So far so good. Wife is the primary tv watcher here and she hasn’t complained much. Added Heartland ($6.00/mo) so she could get her Gunsmoke *grin*. We’re also using several free streaming services (Pluto, Tubi, Freevee - commercials) with no problems. The mute button works just fine for the commercials.

She was used to Cox and I shut them off about a month ago. She’s getting used to the new menus.

Connection now is IdeaTek optical fiber which has been glitch-free so far. The speed is the lowest available, 100M. Nothing here spools/buffers/pixelates/whatever. We don’t game. If I see any pixelation I will bump the speed up.

Use Amazon Firesticks here, have three. They are the TV interface to the internet, work fine. We both have Prime accounts so there’s that too.

Two TVs are up all day. I also have five computers running 24/7.

I’m looking to do something similar, but I would need it on 3 different TV’s in the house. My wife is not going to use a computer to watch TV.

I pay $49 a month just to watch FOX News shows. For me, that is expensive.

Well, I’m not really smart about this stuff; but I understand that if you have WiFi and all of your televisions connected to it, you can have everything on everything.

Well, the ‘Blue’ version of Sling seems to include a lot more than just Fox News.

We were paying over $200 for cable/internet/phone ten years ago(!); and then we cut the cord and went to Roku and simple internet service (and VOIP for phones). We’re paying half of what we used to pay now, even with inflation and price increases.

I’m sure cable is useful for some people; it’s just not useful for us.

We haven’t figured out a way to cast that from our Linux OS computer to the TV.

Hook your computer up to the TV. MY monitor is a 36” ROKU tv. I could just as easily hook it up to my big screen. I prefer to sit in my office chair compared to a couch or a recliner so it works ok for me.

Our problem is that they give you a lot MORE than you want - and charge you for it.

Our computer IS hooked to the TV - you wouldn’t believe the Rube Goldberg arrangement of wires and jacks and splitters we’ve got going on here.

I guess we need to buy one of those so-called ‘smart’ TVs...
