The keel-to-funnel height of SS United States is 175 feet, so after her two 65-foot funnels are removed, her top decks will be 70 feet below the surface if she rests at a depth of 180 feet.
I may
have spoken too quickly.
I was an avid sailor and am used to obstacles on a chart being specified in feet/meters.
I presumed the stated depth was the depth of contact.

Thank you for that excellent 20 min info video with the beautiful images from the Vinik 6.
5 days ago but great nonetheless.
I’d been focused on the garmin tracker with its red flag, but he’s been on the tracker for the tug:

Vinik..
A name I’d seen that should have been on my radar as well (better late than never):

I / you / he arose
Verb
ви́никнути • (výnyknuty) pf (imperfective виника́ти)
(intransitive) to arise, to crop up, to emerge, to spring up, to appear

Going back to the Ukrainian (Cyrillic)...
Recently I’d looked up the phonetic “spelling” alphabet for Russian. I haven’t seen one for Ukrainian specifically but perhaps it’s the same.
I’ve had a lot of fun with “Я”, ya, the last letter of the alphabet in either language (33rd).
Я means “I”, but Я also has a name in the spelling alphabet:
Yakov
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_spelling_alphabet
Who’s neighbor is Yuri (Yu Ю), “U”.
SS United States has a nickname: Big U
This ties in with the flags, bigly, but I’ll save that for another post, when the United States becomes a MARShull.
🙂
I’ve very much enjoy reading the memories posted from those who were blessed to sail on her.
Tangentially, you had reminded me of this place, so I looked it up:

It does look a bit like an old ‘toe pincher’ coffin...
My daughter-in-law’s mother grew up in that area. She and her friend went to the Bird-in-Hand where she met her first husband.
They moved to Washington State where she divorced him because he was cheating on her.
She met a guy on a blind date and they got married in about three months. They’ve been married for over 50 years.
< golf clap>
Well played.
She’s 122 feet from keel to superstructure so even in 180 feet of water, and even if she burrows 30 feet into the bottom when she settles, the upper decks will remain within the limits of sport diving.
I have planed a trip tp FLA next year.
My brother and a good friend, a retired
Navy Seal( he swims like a fish!) may take a look!
:^)
Regarding the S.S. United States, in Bob voice, is this really the end? ;^)
Sal is really good for anything related to shipping. He got on my radar with the Key Bridge collision and collapse.

In May 1897, there was a rumor among journalists that author Mark Twain was either dead or dying of a serious illness. Looking for confirmation, journalist Frank Marshall White of the New York Journal contacted Twain to see if there was any truth to the rumors. Twain responded to White with a letter in which he humorously said “The report of my death was an exaggeration.”

He was praised as the “greatest humorist
the United States
has produced,”[2] with William Faulkner calling him “the father of American literature.”[3]

Mark Twain was born on November 30, 1835—two weeks after the perihelion of Halley’s Comet. “I came in with Halley’s Comet,” Mark Twain commented in 1909. “It is coming again next year. The Almighty has said, no doubt, ‘Now there are these two unaccountable freaks; they came in together, they must go out together.’” He died on April 21, 1910—one day after the comet had once again reached its perihelion.

Thanks for triggering my vague memory of that one. It’ll help me with my ongoing analogy project(s).
I was just thinking about that date. He died stuck between Hitler’s birthday and Earth Day. 🙃
But there’s another story line in between, re the “United States”, even as she’s being tugged by the “Culprit” 6...
the twins Jacob and Esau
The Almighty has said, no doubt, ‘Now there are these two unaccountable freaks; they came in together, they must go out together.’”

Showdown at Hebron
Jacob and Esau not only shared a set of parents and a birthday; they were also buried on the same day.
The Midrash relates that when Jacob’s funeral procession reached the Cave of Machpelah in Hebron, the burial place of Abraham, Sarah, Isaac and Rebecca, they found Esau and his henchmen barring their path. Esau claimed that the sole remaining plot was his by inheritance, after Jacob had already taken his share when he buried his wife Leah in the cave.
When Jacob’s children maintained that their father had bought out his brother’s share, Esau denied this. The transaction had been put in writing, but the deed was back in Egypt, and fleet-footed Naphtali was dispatched to retrieve it.
Chushim, the deaf son of Dan, asked what the commotion was all about, and was incensed to learn that Esau had halted the funeral of his revered grandfather. With a mighty blow of his sword, Chushim severed Esau’s head, which rolled into the Cave of Machpelah and came to rest in Isaac’s lap, where it remains to this day. Thus it came to pass that “Esau’s head lies in the bosom of Isaac.”

Certainly close enough for the analogy, what with everything else falling into place already. It's the right color for matching the midrash.
A map measurement indicates that the lot is ~ 805 ft. long. The red flag for the "SS UNITED STATES END" is alongside near the head...
Length
990 ft (302 m) (overall)
940 ft (287 m) (waterline)
Now if you ask me, the burial can't happen if the coffin's way too short.
⚰️
Coffin
A traditional coffin, as used to bury the dead. Depicted at various angles as a closed, six-sided, wooden coffin, tapered at the head and foot with golden handles.
Commonly used for various content concerning literal and figurative death. May also be used for various content concerning funerals, horror, and Halloween.
Apple and Microsoft’s designs place flowers on their lids.
Coffin was approved as part of Unicode 4.1 in 2005 and added to Emoji 1.0 in 2015.
("Ahh, you brought that tall man some flowers")
That’s a cute story.
Well not the cheating part, but it sure worked out in the long run for the true match to come along from a blind date.
The cheater should have known that a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush!
