The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced earlier this week that it finished phase one of its work in the Palisades and Eaton fire areas, clearing about 9,200 properties.
However, despite removing over 300 million tons of hazardous material, EPA deemed thousands of properties “too toxic” for clearing until phase two – which will be conducted by the Army Corps of Engineers.
Residents cannot begin rebuilding until properties have been cleared, but officials said deferring the properties to the Army Corps shouldn’t change the time frame when it comes to the rebuilding process.
Fire debris has also started to make its way into the ocean, leading to an ocean water advisory from Las Flores State Beach to Santa Monica State Beach.

Celebrity toxicity. I knew it.
Carbon. Carbon is toxic to all life forms. If you had, say, carbon compounds in the air we would all die rather quickly from the toxic effects. (/sarc, for those that need this tag)
I also had a young environmentalist tell me about nasty chlorine. I asked her if she had chlorine compounds in her body. She said something like, "I certainly hope not!" I simply shook my head and left.
The Palisades and Malibu properties are a gold mine for the state guess who may never get it back.
Luckily, there is a big empty reservoir that they can dump all this nasty stuff into.
Translation. Bring more money.
It would not be so toxic to the ocean if they would clean up the debris right away instead of talking about it.
After recently seeing Adam Corollas video of Malibu it shows that almost 2 months have passed and not much has been done.
Where I live was the Nuns Fire, just south of the Tubbs, same county.
The FEMA thing had nothing to do with the state. FEMA contracts with all sorts of vendors. It was bizarre. There were crews from North Carolina driving trucks licensed in Ohio for companies out of Iowa.
There were FEMA officers that oversaw everything. The federal contractors were paid by the ton. Fortunately, I was here when they came. They were about to haul off stuff that wasn’t even damaged. They wanted to remove the barn slab, the barn had burned. They said they had to take it down a minimum of 6 feet below the foundation.
I had a friend whose home wasn’t affected by the fire who got just shy of $600 for what he lost in his refrigerator due to a 3 day power loss. My girlfriend thought we might get something as we were without power for 23 days. The FEMA officer who showed up gave us crap for staying and said had he been here during the fire he would have had us evicted because there was no power or running water. Oddly, we could have lived under a bridge with the homeless and been left alone. She got a FEMA check for $89.33 that she had to pay tax on.
I would never seek help from any government agency under any circumstance.
There are still homes here that haven’t been rebuilt.
“They wanted to remove the barn slab, the barn had burned. They said they had to take it down a minimum of 6 feet below the foundation.”
My God, are you serious? Whatever could possibly justify that? A gold vein under the barn?
Yeah, how did those occupants survive all that toxicity?
Oh, maybe they were affected - they voted Dem, Etc.
They claimed everything was toxic, arsenic, specifically.
Again, they were paid by the ton, that was their real motivation. If you pay someone by the hour, the job will take many hours. If you pay someone by the written word, they will write a lot of words.
I bought a used truck out of California. They put a large CA cancer warning sticker on the window. I should have left it there. Maybe I could tell the dealer I lost it and could they provide another. Status symbol.
That apple juice warning may have been correct if it came from China. Check your labels on the house brand juices, China is common.
