The MONTHLY Gardening Thread is a gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to/removed from our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a MONTH Ping List, but we DO post to the thread all throughout the month. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time.
Yes, they are stock. I planted extra this year - my back garden is shady and a few actually survived our summer. I love them in winter and my back yard smells wonderful.
Both of my Grandmas always grew them, so I specifically searched out a grower for them for the Garden Center.
I got so many THRILLED customers when they saw I carried them in 6-packs...they had the same good memories of Stock as I did as a kid.
Such a unique fragrance; Clove-like but sweeter. Clove mixed with Cotton Candy? LOL!
Thank you! That sounds fun! We’re getting new chicks this spring, so I’ll be spoiling them when they get bigger.
We only did meat birds twice, 25 at a time. They grow so fast and all they do is eat and poop, eat and poop. Besides their feed we gave them the zucchini noodles as a treat took them out on a couple of paper plates and stood back. Gone in a couple of minutes. Plus a great way to use those big zucchini. Enjoy your chicks!
Mexican Coconut Candy
Just two ingredients, couldn’t be quicker. Makes 30.

Vary Dip in chocolate ganache----et voila----a Mounds bar.
Oh, wow!
If I liked coconut....what a GREAT recipe this would be! Will have to try this, for family.
At first glance, I thought they were lemon....we just had an amazing Lemon Mascarpone (w/blueberries) cake, recently.
I’m STILL craving it 😍

Sure would like to have that recipe.
Me, too!!
I’m going to see if I can get it/find it. Will try to go right to the source :)
I’ll post, if I have any luck.
Also ... the description (on the menu) said the berries are triple sec macerated....and, it’s served with honey lemon whipped cream.
If I can get the recipe (it had a wedding cake texture about it!), I will post/ping.
Found this Lemon-Blueberry-Mascarpone-Cake online.

Not that this is necessarily accurate.
I’ll take it.
I’ll bee picking up more white spruces from the NH State Nursery this spring to plant around the property. Having it wetter means I won’t means I won’t be needing to go around and water them. That was a pain.
Warm and dry here in Central Missouri over the past week. Frost is out and the ground is starting to settle up.
Very productive weekend here. Plumber guy made it out on Friday. 5.5hrs and $700 later I’ve got a new freeze-proof hydrant out in the yard. There’s quite a sore on the ground that will need to be tilled up, smoothed out, and reseeded. I’ll make a pass over it with the roto-tiller after work today. If it’s dry enough to work it won’t take long to finish. If it’s not dry enough it will wait for another day.
Spent a few hours with the chainsaw on Saturday cutting up deadfall, one japanese silk tree from the house yard, two callery pears from the hayfield fenceline, and several standing dead trees from around the perimeter. Hauled the scraps from that work off to the sippy hole.
After that I got the little Kubota tractor out and used it to clean up the winter’s deposit of horse poo from the run-in shed and dumped it on the compost heap.
After the last snowstorm some half-wit ran a county plow truck down our road at a high rate of speed and tossed umpteen tons of newly-laid gravel into the road ditch in front of my property. I got Nanner out and pulled as much gravel as I was able out of the ditch and back onto the road but it’s still a stupid mess.
While I had the tractor out I added some gravel to a couple soft spots in cart path that Mrs. Augie has built around the property.
It felt good to get outdoors and accomplish something worthwhile after sitting on my biscuits all winter long. All of the PT that I did over the past 14 months paid off - I don’t feel like I’ve been run over by a dump truck. In fact, I’m not sore at all, which is pretty amazing to me.
The coconut candy sounds awesome! I make Coconut Macaroons at Christmastime; they are a favorite. :)
You got a LOT accomplished! And I HATE IT when you’ve worked hard on fresh gravel and some DOOFUS screws it up for ya! Grrrr!
We’re tapping Maple Trees now for sap, but it’s slow coming. We think the drought conditions this fall have something to do with it. Rain is predicted this week, so hopefully that will get the sap flowing.
I am starting peppers, kale, spinach and lettuces this week. In another week or so, I should be able to do some seeding in flats in the greenhouse. When temps stay above freezing at night, that’s my signal to get hoppin’! :)
(Seedlings will need cover overnight, but sunny days this time of year mean 80 degrees in the greenhouse, so I have to open it up a bit, too!)
I’m still wondering when we’ll get the remaining 40 inches of SNOW that is our average? The Robins aren’t here yet; they usually bring the last snowfalls with them. ;)
Glad you like it.
I was tempted to call the county road department to complain, but that would just give snowplow man an excuse to harvest my mailbox every time he comes through next winter.
The robins are taking their time this year. We’ve only seen a few scouts so far. Been seeing huge flocks of grackles passing through for the past week. I expect the robins aren’t far behind them.
I’m hoping to find time to get some lettuce started in the greenhouse this week. A heating mat under the bag of potting soil should be plenty to keep baby lettuces happy at night this time of year.
And we go from below freezing today and 10 tonite, to 57 for the high and 48 for the low Thurs (w/ rain)! God knows best, thank Him Glad to know you can get out.
Eating from the Garden/Pantry/Our Own Hands:
Today I have Crock Pot ‘Bear-I-Yaki’ in the slow cooker. ;)
I use the recipe below from Allrecipes, but I substitute Teriyaka Sauce for the Soy Sauce, and use bear instead of beef.
The bear and the canned tomatoes are from the freezer and garden/pantry.
When the dish is ready to eat, add a packet of Brown Gravy Mix, or 2 Tbsp. of my homemade Brown Gravy Mix to thicken it up a bit. The homemade mix is a LOT more economical that ‘50-cents a packet’ from the grocery store.

Serve over rice, baked potatoes, egg noodles, mashed potatoes or biscuits. Add a small green salad or a fruit salad on the side.
Dinner is served! :)
