The Garden Thread - March, 2025
March 1,2025 | Diana in WI/Greeneyes in Memoriam

Posted on 03/01/2025 7:23:36 AM PST by Diana in Wisconsin

The MONTHLY Gardening Thread is a gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to/removed from our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a MONTH Ping List, but we DO post to the thread all throughout the month. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time.

Let me know how shallots work for you. I had some starter bulbs a few years ago, but I never had any luck with them. I would seriously LOVE to grow my own shallots. I cook with them frequently. Scrambled eggs with shallots, fresh tarragon, mushrooms, and shredded gruyere are amazing. One of my favorite combos.

Remind me in the fall.

I bought both shallot sets and seeds and am going to try both ways to see which works best.

Hi, Pete, Diana, All,

Thanks, yes, but, I don't think that's the problem. The images I posted in (459) above, for example, were about the "right size for posting" to begin with. Yet, my post looks "messed up" on my end, once actually posted. The image sizes display fine, but the text that is supposed to go with them is misplaced, viewed in Brave, Google, or Edge*:

The 1st line of text looks ok, but the 1st pic appears immediately below it. "( p )" (parenthesis instead of < > for purposes of discussion) doesn't work.

Then my text that is supposed to "head" the 2nd pic instead appears immediately to it's bottom right, trailing off to to the right edge of the window. Again. it appears the HTML gets turned off, by posting the pic.

My 2 sentences following the 2nd pic do the same, i.e., that text string also begin immediately to the bottom right of the (2nd) pic. Again. it appears the HTML (including FR's default HTML) for everything but the insertion of the pics themselves gets turned off, by posting the command for the pic(s).

Edge is actually worse - I'll not bother trying to describe it, here, but, again, it seems the HTML for everything but the insertion of the pics themselves gets turned off, by posting the command for the pic(s).

Hot / clean link to my post 459:

Maybe this pics posting question is worthy of a thread on the main forum?

Oh, I forgot to add:

For comparison, if I try to post something even simpler, like post 455, the comment would not show up below the image, it would run off to the right of the image, beginning at the lower right hand corner of the image... :-(

I hope you don’t get any nasty weather this weekend! NWS has upped us to a “Level 3” risk tomorrow & is hinting at an “upgrade”.* That level 4 we had several days ago was NOT a good thing...

We now have at least 3 and maybe 4 barred owls frequenting our property! Hopefully they won’t try going after any chickens. (I’ve had a hawk half the size kill a large hen!)

Add < p > and < /p > (no spaces) to both your writing and the beginning and end of your photos to separate them when adding photos.

I'll try that again tonight -- I may have typo'd it when I tried B4. :-)

Love Barred Owls! We have one frequently, and another nearby that reciprocates his calls. I have nicknamed them Ollie and Olivia. I think Ollie is Ollie, Jr. Ollie, Sr. passed away a few years ago. Senior used to come visit pretty close to where we could see him. I have several photos of him, that aren’t as good as the one you shared, but I’m a total amateur, and mine were through my window with an entry level DSLR.

Here’s Ollie and Olivia “kissing”. I presume they were grooming and courting. I presume they were courting each other and grooming.

We have some barred owls on our property. Don’t know where they’re nesting but we see them regularly, but not frequently.

I can see Ollie, Jr. in a certain tree from my family room with the binoculars occasionally, typically when the sun hits it just right. I’m sure there are other spots, but I haven’t figured out where those are yet.

Ollie, Sr. was so cool when he would get close like in that first photo. When we bought the house 11+ years ago, the previous sellers told us about him, and they had lived here for 8 years. We were pleasantly surprised when he showed up on that one huge branch, just as they said. When we stopped seeing him, we presumed he passed. That’s been several years now.

He used to hang out in the same tree as Ollie, Jr sometimes, which is how I found Junior one day in the Fall. I saw him fly near there so grabbed the binoculars until I found him. Made a note of which tree it was. When we walk in the park near where we live, we’ve seen him hang out over there too. Always a thrill.

Shallots are WONDERFUL and very easy to grow. They like sun, mulch, adequate moisture and do not compete well with weeds, so stay on top of that.

Pretty much like garlic, really.

I hope you feel better soon. A lot of people I know have “something” - like a bad bad cold but lasts a long time.

I took a shot of Fire Cider this morning, and it really warmed me up, LOL!

I’ll have another before bedtime. :) I’m down to a half-pint. Next winter I’ll make a double batch, for sure.

I’ve had great success with growing garlic.

Thanks for the encouragement.
