Anyway greenies will say it's coals fault

I’ve seen a few catch on fire. It is all the hydrocarbons that these ‘beasts’ have to use to lubricate.

Could be construction....could be other things. The structural design of these towers yields their circularity of the main support. If that is compromised by incomplete connection of the sections OR even just a variation in the wall thickness just sets it up for eventual failure.

Could it have been compromised by damage from a past tornado, with gradual wear finishing it off months or years later?

It does get pretty windy there.

Stopped reading at, “ … a windmill … “
A windmill? Really? The author expects to be taken seriously?

It looks like one of those old kinetic sculptures. It has a lot of kinetic energy in a wind and then just tears itself apart, it failure starts.
I would not be surprised if the failure of only a small number of these negate their entire purpose.
To: DallasBiff
Looks like it just collapsed into a heap. Cleanup should be a breeze.

Gonna need a bigger trash can.

These massive windmills are stupid. I don't think they break even without massive government subsidies.

When I worked in the power industry in the 70s and 80s, spontaneous collapses of coal and natural gas fired power plants was a huge and serious problem. Remember your lights flickering? That was the sign of another power plant collapsing.
But we worked hard, did a lot of R&D, and licked the problem.
(just kidding in case you couldn’t tell)

After traveling through the mid west (OK,TX, NM & AZ), windmills are nothing but a blight on the landscape. Plus they are insufficient.
