Legendary actor, two-time Oscar winner and author Gene Hackman and his wife, classical pianist Betsy Arakawa, were found dead Wednesday afternoon in their home in the Santa Fe Summit community northeast of the city.

Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza confirmed just after midnight Thursday the couple had died, along with their dog.

Mendoza said in an interview Wednesday evening there was no immediate indication of foul play. He did not provide a cause of death or say when the couple might have died.

Hackman, 95, had lived in Santa Fe since the 1980s and married Arakawa, 63, in 1991.

Carbon Monoxide scares me. I just installed 8 smoke/CO detectors in the house. It’s worth the peace of mind.

Dog too? Carbon Monoxide poisoning is a likely reason.

In Colorado Springs years ago, an entire family died as a result of carbon monoxide poisoning. The owner of the house, the landlord, who fixed the heater by himself, committed suicide the following evening.

“Kill me? Lex Luthor? Exstinguish the greatest criminal flame of our age? Eradicate the only man on Earth with Superman’s address?” — One of my favorite movie lines ever.

Thanks! I was trying to remember a role where he plays a GOOD guy!

I also think that it is strange how poorly and dangerously these home heating and other systems are designed. I will consider it "foul play" if everyone was gassed by something in the house in their sleep.

Since modern technology has provided the CO sensor, I can’t believe that CO generating devices aren’t designed to shut off using one or more of them. Compare this to a modern microwave oven, which is full of safety devices with multiple redundancy as if the thing ran on Plutonium.

My house has to be all electric, but the design is just as bad. The heat pump simply shuts itself off for no damn reason and you wake up freezing. No audible alarm, just no heat. Stupid design. At least I get to live, though.

Forensic Pathologist Dr. Michael Baden was on Fox and friends with Ainsley Earhardt this morning. He said it appears to be carbon monoxide poisoning. He described how carbon monoxide from car exhaust in a garage could drift into the house and be sufficient to kill everyone including pets. Also, he spoke about how a natural gas boiler in a water heater could emit carbon dioxide.

Everyone who has possibly of being exposed to carbon dioxide should have detector alarms.
