The first measles death has been reported in West Texas amid the outbreak that has infected more than 100 people, Associated Press reported on Wednesday morning.
Melissa Whitfield, a spokesperson for Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center confirmed the death to AP. The patient's identity and age were not shared.
Covenant Children’s Hospital in Lubbock did not immediately respond to a request for comment from AP. As of Tuesday, the Texas outbreak had affected 124 people across nine counties, according to a statement from the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS).
Cases have also been spreading to New Mexico, with a total of nine confirmed in that state so far.
The DSHS first confirmed the outbreak on Feb. 5. The agency added that the best way to prevent sickness is to receive two doses of the vaccine against measles, "primarily administered" as the combination measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) immunization. This is a developing story.

Ooh, I think you misremember your childhood. Measles was a huge cause of birth defects when pregnant women were expose. Measles was a quarantined disease. Chickenpox had parties.
And measles wipes your immune system memory leaving the patient exposed to a wide array of secondary infections that often damaged or killed them, usually pneumonia or meningitis.
When my siblings and I got it, it was treated with Gamma Globulin, which my father claimed cost $200 a pop back in the early 60’s.
He had a withered arm from polio so us kids were vaxxed six ways from Sunday, we turned out fine.
And I have no problem with it. I am fine with people making their own choices and bearing the risks. But these parents chose poorly and their child is dead. They have to live with that.
Unfortunately, it’s spread like wildfire due to mennonites not being vaccinated. I’d guess the death is from the Mennonite community.
Of course they will scream YOU ARE GOING TO DYE! I HAD MEASLES as a kid, along with all the other childhood diseases. Here I am, 91 yrs alive.
Trump’s DoJ should reach a settlement with the family for the unnecessary death, due to Bidet intentionally admitting millions of unvetted and unvaccinated illegals into the country. Establish a precedent that puts the government on the hook for its intentional deadly policies.
Um, a child actually died. Our neighbor’s child was left permanently deaf. It’s not all lollipops for everyone.
In bed , fever, darkened room...
WOw you beat me so far WVNAN... I’m 83 and I don’t believe I was ever Vaxed for measles either....
When my sister in law legally immigrated here, she had to be certified disease free, and vaccinated for everything under the sun. That they were letting illegal people walk across the border without even a health check is criminal!
Good!
Vaxes? We don't need no stinkin' vaxes! That's for gringoes!
“Brought to you by the progressive, democrat party, and their open borders policy. Illegal aliens do not have to be vaccinated.”
Neither do Mennonites under Texas law.
I understand the value of vaccines. I disagree with the manner of modern day implementation. There were fewer vaccines and they were spread out when I was young. There are crap "vaxxines" now like the COVID disaster. My background in molecular biology and pathogenic microbiology inclines me to favor the attenuated pathogen/antigen over the mRNA approach.
You did not have the measles ( the long horrible one) more than once a many disease cause a rash on the body That is not measles
How many of the 124 are illegals or illegal adjacent?
They are mostly unvaccinated Mennonites.
This can’t be true. I’ve been assured by anti-vaxxers here on FR that no one dies from measles.
Verdad?
LOL...I know parents (and mine were in this group) who ensured that when a contagious disease like Chicken Pox came through, that all the kids went into the bathtub together to ensure they all got it at the same time!
Of course, the measles vaccine was mandatory for me as a kid, and being a military family that traveled overseas, we got all of them, Cholera (the worst) Bubonic Plague, Yellow Fever, all those things.
My poor mother. She had to lie to us to get all six of us in the family station wagon to go get vaccinated. I had a terrible phobia of needles that stayed with me all the way into college, but I was just internally terrified. My younger sister, who was a little bit of a thing (as an adult, she is 4’10”) as a kid, was so violently averse they had to call my father in from his office on the base to restrain her.
For such a small human, she fought and screamed ferociously!
Probably. They likely did okay until all these unvetted people flooded in over the border.
