In some scoring systems you get extra points for A+, also for taking college level courses in HS.
Converse of an A in AP courses = 5, an A in a Special Ed course = 3. As others have noted, AP courses aren’t offered in all high school subjects, so a 5.0 would be impossible.

More than the surname. Probably bad extracurriculars and bad personality.
They get points for AP classes, so GPAs are commonly more than 4.0.
This will be expensive for the schools to litigate.

Some of these Asian kids come off like real jerks on their application. Like they say they wrote a novel, and write terribly, so it looks like they are just trying to make it look good.
I think extracurriculars can matter depending on the major. If your’re doing business management, then activities demonstrating leadership may matter more. But for purely technical jobs that do not have subjective components to the job itself, why should extracurriculars matter?

I have a great nephew who recently scored 1580 on the SAT and I believe he’s been offered a freed ride to MIT, if he wants it.

I concur ... there are a lot of excellent engineering schools in the lower 48. The deep South and the SouthEast have lots of choices. Stay away from the East coast. Screw CA ...
