Phil Collins, 74, Says He’s ‘Very Sick’ 3 Years After Losing Drumming Ability

Phil Collins’ health is deteriorating. “I keep thinking I should go downstairs to the studio and see what happens,” the retired Genesis musician, 74, told Mojo magazine earlier this week. “But I’m not hungry for it anymore. The thing is, I’ve been sick, I mean very sick…”

The group performed their last concert in March 2022 as part of their “The Last Domino?” Tour. Although Collins’ former bandmate Peter Gabriel didn’t participate in the gig, he still attended the London show and observed the performance from afar. “Phil wasn’t in as great a shape as he used to be, but they did a great job,” Gabriel admitted. “Me going was a rite of passage, really. I’d been part of the creation of Genesis, so I wanted to be there at the end.”

Collins sang while sitting in a chair as his son Nic Collins, 23, took over for him on the drums. Seven months later, the duo spoke about their line of work and the struggles that accompany it in the documentary “Phil Collins: Drummer First,” which debuted on YouTube in December 2022.

Roger Waters. He’s obnoxious at home too, kicked son Harry out of band.

Plus the way he treated Rick Wright.

Indeed. The guy in eggs/pancake skit reminds me of a British Anthony Michael Hall.

I am still amazed Zappa managed to perform I’m The Slime live on Saturday Night Live 45+ years ago. He nailed it that long ago.

Ironically, the other members of Genesis, all look great. I saw Steve Hackett last year perform the entire Foxtrot album

Who did he have doing vocals? Or was it all instrumental?

Here are a couple tracks written by Phil Collins (with Brand X):

He’s had a vocalist for years doing the vocals, he’s ok, but of course, you can’t beat the original.

Getting Don Pardo to do his part was brilliant. “Take it away, Frank!”

The Phil Collins character in that episode was named ‘Phil Mayhew’, which was a nod to John Mayhew, the drummer he replaced in Genesis.

Artistry and ideological profundity seem inescapably divergent.

Creative people tend to be emotive and not facts digging oriented not to mention pressure from peers and agents and publicists and studio execs and so on

We spoke on that a few times. Like so many Americans the most fortunate and gifted have a tendency to disrespect the republic, public and God who blessed them.

I've read a few times that Phil Collins is the world's wealthiest living musician. I'm sure he'd gladly trade that for decent health these days.

I guess Genesis is over and done with, but it would have been sweet seeing Gabriel and Hackett joining them on their final tour, with Gabriel doing the vocals from the songs up through "Lamb". Might have been less tiring for Phil, too.

I think the rest of Genesis was sick of Gabriel's excessive stagecraft, dressing up as flowers and such.

But, after he left Genesis, Gabriel stopped doing all that too.

I think after one member left, others stepped in. I think they had other interests besides prog rock, so it evolved. Collins was obviously very influenced by soul music, which made it's way into his solo, and somewhat his Genesis songs.

The last album was comprised of 15 Motown songs, two Dusty Springfield songs written by Goffin/King, and one Ronettes song.

In fact, when Genesis released their Archives of some of the Gabriel-era live shows, in the 1990s, Peter actually had to go in and re-record some of the vocals, because the costumes muzzled the original vocals.
