I think after one member left, others stepped in. I think they had other interests besides prog rock, so it evolved. Collins was obviously very influenced by soul music, which made it's way into his solo, and somewhat his Genesis songs.
The last album was comprised of 15 Motown songs, two Dusty Springfield songs written by Goffin/King, and one Ronettes song.
I think the rest of Genesis was sick of Gabriel’s excessive stagecraft, dressing up as flowers and such.
