It doesn’t help that they pack their buses to the gills with people and caged livestock going to market.

WOW! They fell 2625 feet and there were 14 survivors! I guess they were up to date on their prayers. RIP the other 40.

2,625 feet. Almost exactly 1/2 of a mile. That’s a long time to wait for impact. God keep this people in his care.

Brake failures in those Bolivian mountain roads are a real pain in the neck.

Heck, even Wikipedia has a special page for the iconic "bus plunge story", predating the internet by decades. An all time favorite.

In a remarkable coincidence, I have spent the last hour reading about the silver mines in Potosi, where silver has unearthed since 1545. The city of Potosi has an elevation of 13,420 feet above sea level.

Note to self: Don’t take bus rides in the Bolivian mountains.

There’s another vacation destination crossed off my list.

I’ve driven some of those roads, at every sharp corner there is a shrine to those who did a Perter Pan off the edge. They’re everywhere. I’m amazed any survived.

The accident happened between the cities of Potosí and Oruro, police said

In the 90s, I produced a geological compendium video in Oruro and Potosi. Thankfully, they flew me from La Paz to those towns. The dry, steep desert hills are so treacherous that they were littered with wrecked vehicles at the bottom. In La Paz, they had a severe drunk driving problem, so they lined the main Plaza with crashed blood stained vehicles as a warning to the citizens.
